Re: Metal trim help
Yes, clean it all up and give it a few coats of wax. Or I suppose you could try and paint a clear varnish over it.......

Re: Metal trim help
Well, I don't know what kind of finish you are wanting (and how pristine or otherwise the rest of the car is) but what you have polished up so far - it looks like part of the grille surround - looks pretty good from the photo!

Re: Purolator - how tight?
Make sure the canister is not turning with the bolt as you tighten it up and the canister starts connecting with the top sealing ring or the ring can be damaged. Also, the canister should be roughly 3/4 full of oil before fitting, so you will need to keep finger pressure on the bolt head as you offe...

Re: No MOT
Surely if something is found it just needs to be fixed? Can't see why there would be a requirement for an MOT as well. Same as if an owner finds the brakes weren't working - he/she fixes them. No need for an MOT and vehicle is roadworthy again (assuming nothing else needs doing).

Re: No MOT
I would imagine most 'hands-on' owners familiar with Minors would know if the vehicle is roadworthy or not. Even if they put it in for an MOT they would check it over to avoid a fail. Not that I am advocating one way or the other.

Re: Front indicators
I'm thinking that these indicators were added later, as a UK 1959 car would have originally had trafficators. If the existing assemblies have only one wire (feed), they are probably earthed through the screws fixing them to the metal wings rather than having an earth wire......

Stephen I think you have lost your sense of humour,it was in jest  Just because you don,t like something doesn't make it wrong, you have lots of mods on your minor(from your posts) an alternator is just another mod. :tu1: I bought my minor with many existing mods, including alternator and neg...

" Even when I was a student in Scotland (hardly an ideal climate for a tourer!) I rented a dry garage. It was cheap rent but nowhere near where I lived so I had to take a 30 minute bus journey to get the car. A bit mad and my friends thought I was ridiculously eccentric but now I have last lau...

Re: Removing regulator channel from the glass.
One of mine was easy to separate as the channel has rusted to bits! First thing I knew about it was that the glass just dropped into the door one day!
I would be very careful if using a heat gun in case it cracked the glass.......some kind of solvent might do the job?

The gear box looks like a ribbed case one from a 1098.
Could the oil pressure switch be faulty? You say the engine runs but does it sound good, is it blowing a lot of smoke of any colour?

Re: 1098 engine & gearbox in a 948 (1961) saloon. Good idea? Bad idea?
Of course, at a distance, it is hard to know how good the existing set-up in the car is (nor how good the 1098 units are). As the vendor has offered to swap over the engine and gearbox I would be asking him more about why he has suggested it and what the pros and cons are. You say the original engin...

Re: Better than nothing rust treatment?
Mine was similar but not quite so bad. I got rid of all oil/grease on the floor with gunk de-greaser and then, when dry again, wire brushed/sandpapered it all to get rid of loose rust. Then I painted with black hammerite before painting over that with the proper colour of the car. This was about thr...
