black stuff on new wings
Hi all, Making some progress on restoring minor no 2 at the moment. I bought a new rear wing a while ago (heritage) from ESM - it appears to be pre-coated in some sort of black primer, but i've noticed in some spots it's bubbling with rust underneath!! When i went to wipe it clean with alcohol for p...

Re: How does this sound
Are you sure you didn’t set the clearances to metric sizes, but using imperial feelers? Exactly how did you set the clearances? First action might be to check they are actually as per specification. Did you adjust the tappets without checking if the surfaces were deeply worn/grooved? Sounds like a ...

Re: How does this sound
Thanks Phil, No, the cam followers weren't replaced at the time as they were out of stock on esm I seem to recall. There was some slight putting, so perhaps worth reaching them via the tappet chest? I'll probably just buy a new whole rocker assembly to avoid the risk of the bearings and shaft being ...

Re: How does this sound
As I thought really, what do you think the noise is mainly? Worth just biting the bullet and changing rocker assembly - if so, is that a new head gasket or take the risk?

How does this sound
Not sure if I'm now getting to minute details, but after changing the head, replacing bearing shells, with a new carb (butterfly bearings badly worn on old one) I still think this is a bit noisy. Annoyed I didn't change rocker assembly during the head change - sound a bit tappety? https://youtu.be/8...

Re: Slight surge when coasting top gear
sorry, didnt see the reply. The main bearing was in decent nick - no ridges, per this thread https://board.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=75072 When driving back i noticed that my speedo was significantly overreading - was sitting at 35psi when doing 50mph (on GPS) and around 40psi when doing 60. I put...

Slight surge when coasting top gear
Morning all. Recently I've started to experience a bit of a surge/kangaroo when only lightly on the throttle but particularly when going downhill in top gear. Any idea what this could be? Ruled out fuel as pushing throttle removes the issue, perhaps slightly tooadvanced (although no pinking when goi...

Re: Crankcase breather pipe
Reviving this old thread. I noticed there was play in the throttle pin in the carb recently and fortunately came across a reconditioned carb with no play at an autojumble. The problem is is that it has the later style breather, but I have the old style ventilation with tappet pipe and rocker cover t...

Re: Bearing shell condition
good stuff - maybe there was a fraction of a sec with low oil pressure that caused the rattle, but confident it got it quickly after my priming. Yes - remembered about that nut whilst falling asleep (when i do most of my thinking :D ) Can't bear the thought of having to redrain oil and removing thos...

Re: Bearing shell condition
Hi Phil, Yup, I turned the engine over by hand with starter handle for about 1m before firing up, so I thought that would prime it. The oil pressure went straight to 60 upon firing up, so seems that it got oil very quickly if I hadn't primed correctly. Had a horrible, horrible realisation that I onl...

Re: Bearing shell condition
Job done! Getting the sump on was a total pain - assume that the cork gaskets needed to be trimmed a fair bit as they were about a half in protrudong either side. Turned over the engine on the handle with sparks put a few times to get the oil through the journals and then fired it up! Was disappoint...

Re: Bearing shell condition
thanks Phil. with the new thrust washers installed there's now no backwards/forwards movement when i try and pull/push the crank, which (i think!) is good news. when using the feeler gauge, should the feeler be able to go past the inner raised part of the crank down to the journal, or just slide in ...

Re: Bearing shell condition
Thanks all, managed to get it out using split pin method in the manual. Was worried about something becoming jammed ask the way through though! On main bearing journal clearance, should the feller go all the way down to the crank or just the outer edge of bearing case when measuring? Good news is th...

Re: Bearing shell condition
Hi Phil,
Back at work and trying to get the top main bearing shell out with no success!
I've pushed it a little by the retaining tang side (i.e. tang sige disappears into engine) and turn the engine over with starting handle but nothing moves.
Am I missing something here?

the only thing that will make a difference is if you use it to commute into work. I don't have a "regular" car, but the traveller is insured leisure only and comes in about £90 a year.

Re: Bearing shell condition
Thanks - certainly won't be using those thrust washers, all for replacing. Will buy the std and +005 just in case I need to mix and match if it's ok to do so!

Re: Bearing shell condition
I see that the +003 washers are out of stock everywhere. It's it ok to put one size on one side and standard on the other? Just thinking if clearance is still too large with new standards if I can buy 005 oversize and put on one side

Re: Bearing shell condition
Thanks, just been out and measured and the clearance (with the current worn thrust washers) is 0.006. Weirdly, there's no markings on the back, so have to asse they're standard size. Will order some standard from esm and see if that reduces the gap down to 0.004 max. Otherwise will then order some o...

Re: Bearing shell condition
Thanks Phil, I've measured up the thrust washers that were in there (following the marina manual calling to check for wear) and looks like mine are quite significantly undersize . 0.078 Vs 0.090 (I believe!) and are also down to copper backing I'll add some standard thrusts to my order. In your meth...

Re: Bearing shell condition
Ok, will do. Can't seem to find anything on float in the workshop manual - I take it I need to measure it with feeler gauges when the bearing cap is on?
(Where can you see the float on the picture I uploaded?)
