Re: Rear axle gaskets and seals
While you're at it check the drain holes on the back (facing the diff) of the backplates directly under the axle tube. If the inner oil seal is leaking it's supposed to dribble out here rather than inside the drum and onto the brakes. If they're clear and dry then the oil seals should be OK and you'...

Re: Petrol Tank Again
Has anybody had a go at enlarging their existing tank ? Any do's or don'ts ? You mean apart from "don't go anywhere near a petrol tank with either a grinder or a welder"? Seriously, how are you going to be 100% sure that you've got all the petrol vapour out of the old tank before y...

Re: Rear Window Misting
RainX is for use on the outside of the glass - it makes water bead off so can keep a screen clear (at speed) without the use of wipers. My RainX bottle came with a free anti-fog product by the same people but I found it didn't help at all so gave up on it. Can't help with the cellophane panel though...

Re: Carburettor overflow pipe
Keep petrol well away from the wheels, it's quite a lubricant. My brother had a faulty needle valve on a carb in his Midget once, went straight at a roundabout (at low speed) and bounced off two kerbs ending up with three flat tyres - not a happy bunny!

Re: damper oil
I thought I'd read this somewhere. EP90 isn't as viscous as you'd think from the number. Maybe not an authoritative reference but according to Wikipedia: API viscosity ratings for gear oils are not directly comparable with those for motor oil, and they are thinner than the figures suggest. For examp...

Brake fluid leak
Anyone else experienced this? I'm now having to top it up every couple of weeks (500 miles or so). I've gone round and checked all the unions including the connections to the master cylinder but couldn't find fluid on any of them, the wheel cylinders are dry too. I'm guessing it may be getting past ...

Re: hif38 carb questions
I don't think the HIF38 ever had a lifting pin so you'll have to take the air filter off and use a thin screwdriver to raise the piston slightly.
The idle speed adjusting screw is sort-of in front of the vacuum advance connection, it's basically an end-stop for the throttle cable if that makes sense.

Re: Running on Gas
There could be if you've replaced the carb, later HS2's (and HIF's) have a biased needle that is always in contact with the jet.Alec wrote:the jet\needle wear your refer to won't be an issue with a Minor as there is no physical contact between the needle and jet.

The rocker cover pipe should work just as well.
I was waiting for Roy (bmcecosse) to say just that but he must be off playing with steam trains...

If you mean one of those tin pellet things then yes, you can run what you like through it and it won't have any affect at all.

Re: Very hard starting my morris after storage
I've no idea about fuel preservatives as I've never tried them, but I suggest you try cleaning the points. I often had trouble starting my Sprite after a lay-up and found the points seemed to get surface corrosion or something which increased the resistance. Since changing it to electronic ignition ...

Re: 1275 engine question
I remember Kate saying she ran her 1275 with the 1098 carb initially and said it felt a bit strangled on motorways. It won't harm the engine though if that's what you're worried about.

That looks like it, yes. You'll have to move the standard heater return if you raise the thermostat housing though.

Re: 1275 water elbow
If the angle's OK and you just need to raise it then you could fit the heater take-off sandwich plate from a Metro. It goes between the thermostat housing and the head, I'd guess you'd need longer studs for it. You'd have to block off the heater outlet pipe with a bit of hose with a suitable bolt to...

Ah, you didn't spot me in my tatty maroon Traveller then! 200 mile drive from Reading to a bit north of Aberystwyth and I only saw two other Minors, one black MM somewhere north of Abergavenny and a pale blue saloon on the road between Mach and Dolgellau on Sunday - I was in my friends Polo so didn'...

Re: Door hinge bolts
They're Whitworth. I can't remember what size they are but I'd recommend you get a set of Whitworth sockets One of mine has sheared and others are close to stripping so they really need tapping to a slightly larger size and the bolts replacing to suit. You might end up in the same position by the so...

Re: Do I need an oil gun?
Is it a bad idea, or even impossible, to top the fill up the oil via the breather hole on top of the diff casing? (I guess if I do that, it still makes it impossible to check the oil level every now and then). I used to do this (with a squirty oil can) before I changed the axle as I couldn't get th...

Re: Needle for an HIF38 on a 1098?
I'm running something very similar: MG Metro manifold with HIF38, larger exhaust on a 1098 (std. apart from 1.5:1 rockers) I can't remember what needle I'm using but it's straight off a 1.0L Metro and I get over 45mpg on a long run. There's not an inlet leak you're compensating for to get a good idl...
