Re: End of an era
Thanks for all the kind replies. Basically, someone pulled out without looking properly, hit me on the nearside and I ended up in a ditch back on the wheels having rolled. I don't have any photos but it's a bit of a mess, fortunately the main roof stayed intact though one of the rear pillars was bro...

End of an era
I'm sad to report the demise of my faithful Traveller after 19 years service. I had a rather nasty crash last week which I was lucky to walk away from, though I expect to still have aches and pains for a while yet. I've decided that I'm not going to get another Minor just yet; though I may get bored...

Re: ignition
My view is different. :) If you do any mileage then from my experience electronic ignition is a great idea, it cuts down on maintenance and means your car runs at its best all the time. I fitted the Magnetronic module. In fact I've even fitted it to my Sprite which only goes out on warm sunny days b...

Thermostat
Anyone running with a 92 degree thermostat? I've an 88 degree one and was after a better heater for the winter, just wondering if there's any downside to going hotter.

Re: Highest Mileage Ever?
Mine 'only' managed 192,000 on the original engine, it's now on 272,000. That's assuming the 5,000 it read when I got it in 1992 was actually 105,000. The original engine would probably have gone longer if I hadn't overheated it and warped the head/block.

Re: Electronic Ignition - Which System ?
I've fitted a Lumenition Magnetronic module - it goes inside the distributor cap. As IslipMinor says, just keep the points plate etc. and you can swap back.

Re: Thread for hinge bolts?
I got some from ESM once I'd run a tap through the captive nut holes. Fortunately it was the old bolts that were knackered rather than the captive nut plates. Anyone got any tips on getting hinge pins out? I tried vice and big hammer but it wouldn't budge - well, it must have moved slightly as there...

Re: No spark at the plug? any ideas?
If it is a side entry dizzy cap are you sure the screw has cut into the ht leads okay? You should be able to test them with a meter so long as you have copper leads. If they're resistive carbon leads they should still read a few kOhms on a meter. I doubt it's the de-arming switch that's the problem...

Re: Breathing on 1275 engine
If you have a breather on the rocker box then block it off and just connect the timing cover breather to the carb. I have just carried out tests on my Midget engine with the following results. Timing cover breather connected to breather control valve, no breather pipes on carbs, and rocker box brea...

Re: Austin Healey Sprite wheels
Genuine Frogeye wheels are just as narrow as Minor wheels, Rostyles are a bit wider. That's why I've only got 145 tyres on my Frog.mike.perry wrote:Same PCD but unless they are wider than Minor wheels then no point. I have 13 x 5.5 wheels so they will take 175/80/13 tyres

Re: How to put telescopics on with lowering blocks
I don't see 'cos' has anything to do with it. When vertical you get full damping. When horizontal you get zero. I don't see any reason to not simply apportion the damping rate to the mounting degree, So 'simple' maths says 45 degrees will give half damping , and 30 degrees will give 66.6667% dampin...

I wouldn't worry about them not being vertical, basic maths tells me that a 30 deg angle gives 87% of the full damping etc.

I ran mine for years with a diff where the filler plug was seized and filled it via the breather hole. I used a bit of stiff wire as a dipstick.

Re: Acetylene
There is some defence in only allowing people to hire the gas cylinders rather than refilling their own unless you get your cylinders tested periodically. I don't know what pressure they use for acetylene, but with scuba cylinders they must be tested (visual/pressure) every couple of years or you'll...

Re: Are front bump stops important???
After almost four months of owning my saloon and getting on now for two thousand totally trouble free miles (except for all the usual minor niggles) I have just realised that I'm supposed to have suspension bump stops... I do have one... at the front... on one side... I take it this is an issue? It...

Re: Rear axle leaking into drums
Isn't there a filler plug in the front of the diff casting? Early cars had the filler there, later ones had the filler in the back of the axle casing. It may be that someone's fitted a later diff to an early axle which means no filler at all! If you've filled it all the way up to the breather then i...
