Re: Setting distributor timing from scratch

well done, every fault sorted is another set of information stored ,and a great deal of self satisfaction, you could have stuck the car in to a dealer and paid a small fortune,I know a guy who has so little inclination to even change a flat tyre that he doses even know where the wheel brace and jack...

SOLVED- Door won't stay locked

I fitted a new striker plate from ESM, together with an extra spacer that I cut from lino, and the door now shuts and locks as it ought to. I'll probably replace the handle mechanism at some point as the latch is also worn, but it'll do for now. The only difficulty was removing the screws securing t...

Re: Setting distributor timing from scratch

Well I loosened the throttle adjusting screw until it was just clear of the throttle lever with the throttle closed, then tightened one and a half turns (as per this manual: http://tr4a.weebly.com/uploads/2/1/9/8/21980360/type_hs_tuning__tervicing.pdf), then advanced the distributor by turning the b...

Re: Setting distributor timing from scratch

you don't need the choke other than for starting, once running ,at this time of year a few hundred yards.push it right in. without a rev counter ,(Have you one fitted, not standard) its just done by ear, turn it down until you feel that its going to stall, turn it up gradually, and then get in and press...

Re: Setting distributor timing from scratch

Thanks Kennatt, The revs are really high at tickover - if anything it sounds worse in real life than in the video! Re: cooling, I'd topped up the coolant before leaving home and the level hadn't dropped when I returned, so there's no leak. I read elsewhere that symptoms of retarded timing include lo...

Re: Setting distributor timing from scratc

What colour were the plug electrodes and ceramic cone? There is no way they should be wet after even only a 5 mile trip with the engine up to temperature. What colour was the tailpipe? I think it needs tuning up properly before looking for other faults Here's a snap I took last night- not great as ...

Re: Setting distributor timing from scratch

Probably. What is the advance on the timing according to the timing mark (using a strobe light)? Fuel mixture could be contributing also. I'm going to order a strobe light as I haven't got one; I think the timing may be too retarded. Went for a ten mile round trip to my allotment yesterday. The eng...

Re: Setting distributor timing from scratch

Just an update; after doing some reading on here, it looked like the fuel mixture might be too weak, so I enrichened it by one flat and now it’s happy even at low revs. Went for a 40 minute drive and all was well, though a bit sluggish moving away from a standstill. It’s mostly 20mph limits round he...

Re: SOLVED! Setting distributor timing from scratch

She's running again! I worked my way through methodically, finding TDC on the bottom of the crankshaft pulley, checking no.1 piston was at the top of the compression stroke. There's a painted mark on the fan pulley, and when I first checked, it lined up perfectly when no. 1 piston was at TDC. Rather...

Re: Door won't stay locked

Quick question - when I pull the door handle, there's a good quarter-inch of play, locked or unlocked; ie the latch retracts about a quarter of an inch. Is this normal? I had another look and the issue is that this quarter inch is enough to get the latch over the far edge of the striker plate, plus ...

Re: Door won't stay locked

Allow yourself plenty of time to change a complete handle assembly, it is not just a couple of screws you have to remove, the rear upright part of the window frame has to be moved to get it out. I have just totally stripped a pair of spare doors I obtained for my Traveller, and the door handles wer...

Re: Door won't stay locked

The drivers side door handle shouldn't have a "locking lever" on the inside anyway. They were only fitted to the passenger side. I'm not sure which part of the locking handle wears out - or if it can be replaced - but my old Traveller used to do exactly the same once the handle became wor...

Door won't stay locked

To add to the other headaches my Traveller is causing me, I just discovered to my horror that the driver's side door won't stay locked. If you lock it, and then repeatedly pull the handle, it'll eventually open as far as the first catch, and then entirely. Likewise, slamming the passenger door will ...

Re: Setting distributor timing from scratch

Thanks both, Suggestion noted and understood- that’ll be my next move. Thank you everyone for the support and help, this forum has been incredibly valuable as I’ve learned to live with an old car. It may look like I just get into stupid messes all the time but the car is coming on in leaps and bound...

Re: Setting distributor timing from scratch

Thanks all, I'm still charging the battery but I've left the spark plugs out and will have another go as soon as I can. Maybe the OP will have learned to only change one setting at a time so that they know where any occuring fault lies.🙂 I think this is what's called poetic justice; it was drilled i...

Re: Setting distributor timing from scratch

You might want to leave the plugs out overnight and let the fuel in the cylinders evaporate away, then give it another go tomorrow. Before you put the plugs back in check to see if you are getting a nice fat blue spark. I have not seen those neon plug caps before, is it possible they are sapping so...

Just to clarify, as I forgot to say - this is a Lucas 25D distributor, with a new cap from Distributor Doctor, new leads and spark plugs from Accuspark and a new Accuspark Stealth ignition module.

Re: Setting distributor timing from scratch

When you had N°1 at TDC, what direction was the rotor arm pointing in, it should be approx 2 o'clock. If it was at approx 4 o'clock then you will be firing number 1 cylinder at the top of the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke. If the timing is in fact correct for the rotor arm and le...

Setting distributor timing from scratch

Like a fool, I thought I'd get the engine running a bit more sweetly, and moved the distributor without marking its original position first. I've been kicking myself ever since. To cut a long story short, I've scoured the forum and read and (I think) understood every thread I found, particula...

Re: Replacing Brake Cylinders

Thanks both, I think I have a better understanding of what's going on now. I'll have a search and read up about hub gaskets; to make life interesting the two rear hubs are non matching, the leaky one has MOWOG on it and only one threaded drum screw hole, the other has no markings and two threaded dr...
