Re: Rear spax telescopic shocks
Thanks as always Phil. They would be more expensive than the ESM ones wouldn’t they! What are your thought on them? I find the ride a bit fidgety but getting better as I adjust the damping rate down and reduce the tyre pressures to 24psi.

Rear spax telescopic shocks
Good morning collective hive mind, another conundrum. My recently acquired 68 2 door has spax telescopic shocks all round fitted by a previous owner. The rears appear to be weeping slightly and may need replacing prior to me MOTing it in the next week or two. The problem I have is I can’t find the t...

Re: yet another heater tap failure
Yep, fitted by previous owner. Spotted puddle of antifreeze under the car, quick investigation and it was dripping out of the valve end.
Now replaced with older style brass screw tap bought from ESM as a precaution

yet another heater tap failure
drip drip drip

Re: Diff question
Surely I’d need to account for the planetary ratios then. Couldn’t reply on propshaft rotations to tell me anything. If I rotate both wheels one rotation in the same direction then only the crown wheel will have spun and hence the pinion turns could be relied on.

Re: Diff question
Yes I suppose if you were to jack up the rear, put the car in 4th (1:1), and turn the engine a few times using the crank handle, you could get a reading on how many times the rear wheels go around for that number of engine turns! Seems a bit like hard work compared to lifting the rear end. (I have ...

Re: Diff question
Last line of my post “ Without taking anything apart or fitting a tachometer any thoughts how I could check. ( jack the rear and spin the wheels? Both I presume)” I’m thinking the overall ratio is influenced by the gearbox. If I Jack the rear wheel off the ground and rotate them I could count the ro...

Diff question
As I discover more about my new to me 1098 I’m wondering about the diff. It seems to be very quiet compared to my previous car and for a given speed the engine certainly seems to be revving less (purely subjective as yet) Did a quick road speed check against gps at an indicated 60mph is 53 on gps. A...

Re: mission accomplished and a revelation
Best car I’ve owned by far was a BMW 5 series, owned for 5 years with no faults whatsoever ever. 50 plus mpg, loads of space and comfort and gadgets in abundance. Worst by miles was a Volvo 240 estate. 12mpg and a seat that had collapsed. Cars I wish I’d kept, MGB roadster that I converted to V8, BM...

Re: mission accomplished and a revelation
Not far off. Yes we’ve owned 120 plus cars in a combined 80 years of driving. Sometimes 7 at once but more frequently 4-5 at any one time. And we do change approx 1 per year.

Re: mission accomplished and a revelation
Indeed. But the difference is more than just dampers. After owning over 120 plus cars I’m used to alight differences between similar models but these are chalk and cheese. Neither better, just different

Re: mission accomplished and a revelation
Your 2-door should not be "choppy and fidgety". I suspect you need to check both the front and rear suspension. Worn bushes, non-functioning dampers, tired or broken leaf springs, even incorrect tyre pressures are all possibilities. Stephen It has spax telescopic conversions at the front ...

Re: mission accomplished and a revelation
After a second run even the seating position is very different. And both have (had) reupholstered seats. The traveller was quite upright but the saloon is tilted backwards. It needs the ‘wooden block’ mod to get a good seating position. However all these things will be looked at in due course. For e...

mission accomplished and a revelation
my search has finally ended and my traveller has been replaced by a nice 2 door saloon but What a difference. Where the traveller was a comfortable smooth ride the saloon is choppy and fidgety. The clutch a sharp where the traveller was progressive. The brakes feel a little better and the engine is ...

Why is it..?
For seasons that make sense to me I’ve ended up selling my Traveller to a pal. His need is greater than mine. Before I sold it there seemed to loads available within easy reach so why is it that now I’m looking for a replacement there’s nothing suitable within 100 miles!

Re: wiring diagram
In my case it worked fine for turning right but turning left it overshot the contacts and had to be pulled back a little. Also the chrome arm was looking very sorry for itself.
Also I’d sold a few bits and bobs so had a little surplus cash in the coffers so I thought I’d treat the old bus.

Re: wiring diagram
Hi Stephen, after about 4-5 attempts I’ve got it working and can confirm your memory is correct, thanks
Why can the wires be manufactured with a similar colour code?
Now I’ve got to sort out the cancelling cam! That’s a faff too!
All good fun

and I can't see the wiring diagram folks keep referring to at the top - looks like an orphaned link?
anyone help please?
