Re: Timing chain
Must have been pretty quick, my TR7v8 only makes aroun 200hp and is pretty nippy. The std rover V8 uses a morse chain on a fibre timing wheel plenty of slop but they don't usualy rattle. ‘‘Twas a tad quick. I did a lot of work to that engine, cam, gas flowed heads, fancy exhaust headers, flowed inl...

Re: Timing chain
The engine was rolling roaded at 247bhp which was nice but the torque was exceptional. Grumpy, I'd like to buy this car. Sounds like a monster, hope it stopped as well as it went. :D Ha, yes it had willwood 4 pots and vented discs. Was a real sleeper as from the outside it looked quite standard apa...

Re: Timing chain
Anecdote time. I’ve always replaced single chains with duplex simply because ‘why not?’ Many years ago I converted an MGB to take the glorious Rover V8, the engine came from a trusted source having been removed from an SD1 vitesse. In it went and ran nicely but no matter what I did I couldn’t stop t...

Re: Head gasket sealant?
Thanks gents, block is flat as tested by known good straight edge and backlight. Stud holes are not countersunk but might do that before reassembly, I like the idea. My studs are a mix of HT and standard. Odd. Rocker studs are HT (tapered tops) outside shorter studs are standard but have shouldered ...

Head gasket sealant?
Hopefully will get my reconditioned head back this week and I’m interested in the perceived wisdom read head gasket sealant. In the past I’ve used all sorts and nothing with equal success. Hylomar, grease, Vaseline, welseal, copper slip, payen gaskets, composite gaskets etc. I’ve ordered the copper ...

Re: Advice
When I bought mine it had been ‘restored’ 7 years previous but kept outside most of the time. The wood had been varnished and had started to crack at the joints letting moisture in. One of my first jobs was to remove all of the varnish and allow the wood to dry out in my de-humidified garage for a m...

Re: Bonnet pull conversion
I made an extension from a length of 3mm welding wire, about a foot long with a hoop at each end. Works fine and allows the radio to be sited under the metal dash on the right hand side of the steering wheel. The pull now rests freely on the parcel shelf in easy reach.

Re: Where have all the classics gone!
I'd have to agree with some of your observations. I live in North Wales and here the motorist is treated with contempt and suppression by the authorities. Theres a constant movement to oppress motoring activities here, endless speed bumps, traffic cameras, traffic lights on roundabouts and most rece...

Yes https://www.bowerspartsonline.co.uk/lighting/front-lighting/7-inch-headlights/7-classic-car-sealed-beam-domed-lens-headlightheadlamp-halogen-h4-conversion-without-pilot Blimey, that’s cheap. Thought I’d done well ordering WiPAC set with Lucas bulbs via a landie specialist on eBay. £36 delivered.

Re: Spitfire Fuel-Catalyst
Sorry I asked. Don’t be put off by the negative responses the folk here are very knowledgable and equally helpful. Sadly the type of thing you’ve bought have been shown over the past 20 or so years to have no tangible benefit but equally no detrimental effects either. There are some good products o...

Re: Traveller Window Mystery
Here's an interesting puzzle. After driving a short distance, one of the rear windows on my traveller slides forward. I clip it shut before setting off but after 2 or 3 miles the window is fully open. I intend to jam the catch closed but I can't fathom what causes this. Any suggestions? Google “gyr...

Re: Noisy engine
Thread revival Still getting the odd but regular rattle and did notice something new the other day. Slight puff of blue smoke after idling for some time. Now I’m wondering if I’ve got a worn valve guide causing the valve to rattle as it moves up and down. Decent compression (145-150 all round) so no...

Re: Insurance
Actually yes I do. I buy Heinz bean from Tesco’s, they don’t charge a service charge. Stanley tools from screw fix, they don’t. Sony TV from curry’s, nope. I don’t see why I should pay some one for the privilege of letting them sell me something. £35 for a 10 minute phone call so someone can press s...

Re: Insurance
It would seem from my experience that this is partly true. In all cases I requested a breakdown of the overall cost. In each case the 'premium' was low at around £65 with 5% tax added as expected. But then there were 'extras', like agreed value, legal protection, breakdown cover etc, and a mysteriou...

Re: Insurance
Well a few hours on the phone has been most beneficial. Rang around several insurers and got quotes from £112 to £149. Still nowhere near as cheap as last year. So want back to each and started playing them off against each other. All were reluctant to budge on the premium and tax but unpicking the ...

Insurance
I know this is an old chestnut but I’m wondering if there’s some fundamental change that’s taken place in the last year effecting classic premiums? I’m an old retired geezer, no claims, no convictions, live in a low risk area and have in total 5 cars with all the toys garaged. Premium last year was ...

Applied yesterday afternoon. Very easy to apply, very quick to apply. Whole process including lifting the car took well under an hour. No need for extensive masking as the gun is very controllable. It’s quite thin so applying too much causes drips and it has quite a unique ‘farm yard’ odour. Overspr...
