Re: Tracking - too much toe in
I have read this thread with interest as I am about to replace my steering rack. All the comments are helpful and explain what needs to be done, but having seen the drawing in the workshop manual, it shows 'toe-out' which is surely wrong? The text clearly refers to 'toe-in' but the drawing shows the...

Re: Hardening half-shafts
If you only paid £30 for a pair of NOS half-shafts you had an absolute bargain. :tu1: :tu1: :tu1: 😁 yes, I could not quite believe my luck! I know some people have never had a half-shaft break, but I have once and it is not something I would wish to repeat. I have a 1275 midget engine, 1.75" c...

Do you have a diagram for one with an alternator and indicators?

Re: Hardening half-shafts
Thanks, yes but they are still over £550! My pocket won’t stretch to that which is why I’m looking to get my set hardened. I picked them up for £30 so there is scope for a much cheaper route.

Re: Hardening half-shafts
You can buy new tough shafts from at least David Manners and ESM, and probably the other suppliers too. I think that would be better value rather than hardening existing shafts. Yes, the ESM ones are £623 and David Manners lists them at £344 but unavailable, which is why I am looking at this option...

Re: Hardening half-shafts
Thanks for the replies. I have done a search of the forum, but nothing came up with any great details. A web search did come up with this firm who I may contact and may be the one mentioned:
Heat Treatments Ltd,
Sheaf Close,
Lodge Farm Industrial Estate,
Northampton,

Hardening half-shafts
I have been fortunate enough to obtain a pair of NOS half-shafts and wanted to get them hardened before fitting. Does anyone know who can do this? Preferably in the South East as I live in East Sussex, but may have to send away if further afield.

Fitting indicator bulb in L549 rear light.
My 1960 saloon has the original Lucas L549 rear light units which house the rear and brake lights. A separate indicator light (Lucas L488) has been fitted by drilling a hole in the wing just above it, a common upgrade and it all works well. I am about to have two new wings fitted (the old ones have ...

Re: Drivers Handbook or Operation Manual?
Thanks, yes I have seen those and will probably keep an eye out for a reasonably priced one. I just wondered if there was any difference between the Operation Manual and a Driver's Handbook, or are they the same thing?

Drivers Handbook or Operation Manual?
I am looking for an original handbook/manual for a 1952 MM and have come across both 'Driver's Handbooks' and 'Operation Manuals'. Are these the same thing? If so which edition would be suitable? I already have the BMC workshop manual which covers most things, as well as a comprehensive parts list.

Re: Prop shaft and differential
Thanks for all the advice. The new differential was put in yesterday and going from 4.22:1 to 3.9:1 has made a huge difference and the car drives much more happily now. I was surprised to find that all 4 of the bolts holding the prop shaft to the diff were slightly loose, even with lock nuts, but I ...

Prop shaft and differential
I am about to put a reconditioned differential in my back axle, but the workshop manual states that the prop shaft flange needs to be marked so that it is replaced in the same relative position to the differential flange. However, if I am fitting a new differential, this will not be possible. Am I m...

Trafficator arm covers
I am trying to work out what the colour of the trafficator arm covers should be on my 1960 black 2 door. I have looked at Ray Newell's 'Original Morris Minor' book and while some seem to be coloured the same as the body, some are polished chrome. Does anybody know...?

Re: Fitting an aluminium GB plate to car
No, it was our own 'world beating' government who decided to overturn over a century of GB recognition and changed it to UK so that the people of Northern Ireland felt included. I suppose you could test your aluminium plates by driving in a bus lane and see if you get a fine? I suspect you will get ...

Alternative jack and starting handle
The standard jack for the Minor is an adequate affair, but I found a better one in a scrapyard many years ago, in the days when you could wander round poking in every car, even when they were stacked on top of each other several high! It is stamped 'Metallifacture', who made jacks for many makes of ...

Indicator stem bulb brightness
Following on from my fun fitting a new indicator stem bulb (https://board.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?p=689492#p689492) I found that LED bulbs are not all equal. I had read elsewhere in this forum that coloured LEDs give a much brighter appearance, notably on rear lights. I purchased a replacement gre...

Re: tachometer/rev counter wiring
Apologies for hijacking an old thread, but despite looking at lots of instructions and wiring diagrams, I am still uncertain about how to connect my tachometer. It is a negative earth RVC 1410/00AF - see photos. The car is negative earth. As far as I can make out, the spade connector attached to the...

Re: age old tyre question
I have been through a similar process with my car. It sat in the garage for nearly 14 years awaiting time and TLC to get it back on the road which I finally did last year. Having sat in the dark, the tyres look almost new and have around 5mm of tread on them (see photo). However, when I checked the ...
