there are conversions out there, there are various hidden strengthening bits too.
You will need to read up very carefully as the DVLA regs have gotten a lot more strict recently. By modifying the shell it may have severe implications on the registration and also mot implications.

if the car has been sat since the conversion it could just be siezed.

could you retake those pictures from a little futher away so that we can get a sence of the area and which way the camera is pointing, (I suspect you are shooting straight up)

on that meter the rotary switch needs to point to DCV 20 which is at about 9.30 in that pic. The black probe should connect to Com and the red to the other plug.
