Re: Sidevalve engine temperature gauge
I think you'll find that depending on which point you choose to fit the sensor at, you'll get a big variation in readings, as if you've got no heater, I presume you've got no water pump on your engine either. I suspect that the gauge will be useful in terms of indicating what's 'normal' rather than ...

Re: Current Full Respray Cost
I'd be interested where you're getting a quote of £1000 in 2024. I could be ok interested at that price. Thanks Me too. The person I paid to respray my car clearly saw me coming as I paid more than that. Wish I'd realised!!! So, EVEN if the job only took 50 hours of work (which is probably on the l...

Re: tyre pressures
I I have seen the question of tyre pressure come up on facebook and the stupidity of some people is still quite frightening. I've seen it where some answers have been to use the pressure given on the tyre sidewall. That's the Maximum Pressure, whatever the tyre is fitted to! You and me both - I als...

Re: Availability (or lack thereof) of 145/80 R14 tyres
I totally agree with ManyMinors. I fitted a set of Blockley tyres to my 1962 car a few months ago and it drives really well on them. Again, I'm not sure why having a rolling radius closer to the original tyres would be a disadvantage?

Re: Beehive Springs -again!
I feel disappointed. I've been missing out on the drama of beehive springs for 30 years :-( . Some of cars haven't had them, and were fine (pretty sure that BMC weren't even certain they were needed on front brakes, though I know we are talking about rear ones here), and on the cars that I've owned ...

Re: Speedometer Compatibility
I'm pretty sure they would, as I think that the speedo drive gear is the same ratio in 948 and 1098 gearboxes (it's totally different in the earlier 803 boxes though). So, as long as the speedo is matched to the final drive it was intended for (i.e. 948) it will ready accurately. It's the 'TPM' or t...

Re: Speedometer Compatibility
The one that you've said is balck and 90 mph is listed on that site as bronze and 80 mph. that makes sense as all 948 speedos were (to the best of my knowledge) bronze and 80 mph. Early 1098 ones were still bronze, but 90 mph, before the change to black ones. I can't answer regarding the differences...

Re: Ignition timing too far advanced
The pinking test isn't always the best. I DO have good hearing and of the several Minors I've owned over the years, some just haven't pinked audibly even with ludicrously advanced timing. The engines are relatively low compression which makes pinking a little less likely. The critical thing to check...

Re: 12g206 head thickness
There's a lot of useful info on that in David Vizard's book 'Tuning the A-Series, if you have access to it, regarding determining CR.
Use a sheet of glass or perspex over the cylinder head chambers too for an accurate measurement

Re: 12g206 head thickness
You'd likely need to skim it a little more beyond what it's already had (or at least measure the combustion chamber sizes as they are now) even if fitting it to a 1098, as the chamber sizes are larger than the standard 1098 12G202 head ones. Measure it properly before you fit it to make sure you get...

Re: Dim indicator arm light
I suspect it is the flasher unit. I had a similar problem recently and was so sick of the poor quality flasher units available that I sourced and fitted a VDO (German-made) one for a 1970s VW Beetle/T2 van. It works brilliantly. Here is the sort of thing: https://www.heritagepartscentre.com/uk/11195...

Re: Can’t get my daughters car to start
YES, there is a winter/summer setting: The air filter casing can be rotated so that in the summer the intake tube is pointing away from the exhaust whilst in the winter it is rotated so that it draw warm air from immediately above the exhaust. To make the rotation, simply loosen the wing nut on top...

Re: Combining Accuspark and Sparkrite.
I'd imagine Sparkrite either use an optical sensor in the distributor, or a magnetic one, which then triggers the amplifier. Both will depend on movement, so static timing can be a bit hit & miss Sparkrite uses the original points to trigger their Unit, which then provided the switching to make...

Re: What oil filter
The last thing you want on a Minor gearbox synchro baulk ring is extreme pressure oil. You need a oil that is quickly cleared from the baulk ring. Everything else in the Minor gearbox can cope with EP oil. That's interesting Phil as I understood that many other gearboxes that ARE specified EP oil u...

Have you checked the voltage reaching the fuel pump? It seems unlikely that several new pumps would be faulty. I had this problem 20 odd years ago and it was due to a poor power feed to the pump

Re: Engine cut out -fine red particles in the fuel
It sounds as though you have identified something that is definitely an issue. That said, I'd keep an open mind as from what I can tell, there isn't any proof that the rust you've found definitely was the cause of the car cutting out. I would keep an open mind as there could be something else causin...

Re: Compressions for 1098 engine
I'd be careful before you start stripping the engine for a problem that likely doesn't exist, as you said the car runs and pulls OK. There's not a great difference between 'wet' and 'dry' readings, suggesting the rings aren't bad, and as someone else pointed out, the readings are extremely consisten...
