What is underneath the Traveller rear seats?

Post by acmsb »

Hello everyone

I am cleaning out the interior of my Traveller (1969) with a view to laying a new carpet. This involves taking the rear seat out. Looking underneath it for the first time, there seemed to be remnants of some sort of horsehair matting/underfelt.

Does anyone know if that was standard for Travellers or what would have originally been under there? I would be delighted to replace it, if I knew what it was!

All advice/ideas very welcome!

Thank you!

Soundproofing material? Mine has a tar-faced mat of waterlogged felt in it. Rust city, baby! Like this stuff??

That looks very like it - thank you!

How do you lay it down? Is there some kind of adhesive that you used?

Also (please excuse the dumb question) - which way up is it laid? With the black side up?

Thank you!

I'd bin it. Just encourages rust, and with all the other trav noises going on the sound deadening effect is minimal :D

I wouldn't try to glue it - so that you can easily remove it if it does get wet, hopefully not. And you can turn it over as and when you please! 8)
It will give some sound deadening effect. It is under the back seat of my '55 four-door, old, dry .......but not glued in any way....

This area is where they rot out, being a low point and away from fresh air flow. Ours needed a little repair here and I added a double-skinned hatch with a catch that hides behind the carpet. That felt is a nasty way to trap moisture so best to not use it unless your car never leaks or gets wet.
