Distributor advice

Post by greendefender123 »

Hello I need new points Rotor arm and cap for my Traveller. Priced up with distributor doctor between £40-45 depending on what points iv got fitted. Gonna check my distributor first as I don't think the vacuum advance works. If it dosent work is it worth me just getting the electronic ignition that everyone fits and just keep my old as a spare?

Will it be ok with a dynamo as I plan on keeping that? Guessing I just need to check the dynamo voltage before fitting. I will be converting to negative earth as all my batteries are around the wrong way.

Also guessing these are a waste of time http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110522034607? ... EBIDX%3AIT

Thanks alot Steven

the electronic ignition that everyone fits

Which one would that be? There are several choices on the market, so presumably not everyone fits the same one.

Options are, as I see it, fit parts to current distributor and repair the vacuum advance, repair the vac advance and fit an electronic module, buy any one of the distributors on the market (Kettering or electronic) or fit one of the more sophisticated electronic systems available.

If replacing the item, retaining a set of points might be more sensible than storing the defunct distributor, if that is an option.

This one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190877040836? ... EBIDX%3AIT

The thing is if my vacuum advance needs replacing the parts are another £20 tho could just be the spring that's gone. I could probably just leave it and check the points gap but the caps really bad and. I don't know how long distributors last. Had to change the one in my father's car due to poor quality components. Il pop it out and have a proper look sometime. Would prefer points but don't want/can't spend much on it.

Thanks Steve

Decided to get the accspark one as they seem very good. I'm going to change the cap and arm on the old one as theyre really bad. Especially the cap. I will keep this for a get you home spare. Tho will probably look into fixing at somepoint.

Thanks for the help and advice. Steve

I have had two pre-mature failures within a year with caps on those Accuspark distributors. The brushes wear very fast. In my opinion they are rubbish. I replaced it with one made by FACET which is very good quality.

Worth getting a new cap then. Has it been ok otherwise? Seems for the money you cant really go wrong if what people are saying is true.

Just to close this thread now. Iv got the new distributor in and fitted. Had to retard the timing abit. My old points were completely gone. Surprised it ran atall before. I haven't got a new cap yet but will when I see the doctor. Thanks for the advice on this Steve.

Excuse the dirty engine bay.
