Proposed Vandalism by Highways England

Post by LobbyLudd »

The future of the world famous RHS Gardens at Wisley and 500 specimen trees, including the giant Redwoods are all under threat from Highways England in proposal options to widen the A3.
If you care for one of our unique historical sites that would take hundreds of years to even try to replicate there is a petition under way (access through the Royal Horticultural Society website)

At what price do we agree to continue the ever marching on of this ruthless spreading of tarmac in cases like this on this small island with little regard for our special sites of unique national heritage and importance (in this case international importance ) that we had wished that our grandchildren could continue to enjoy ?????

I don't think we should agree at any price, but we don't seem to have much choice. The powers that be are in favour of concreting over this island regardless of the consequences. :(

It is good to think Mr Titchmarsh could do something actually useful and positive with this particular issue after obviously making his dosh from a great variety of 'celebrity' exploits. Good luck to him with this particular project .

Not sure if he actually prefers to be known as - Gardening 'expert/broadcaster/journalist/author/writer. Royal gardens and horticultural official adviser and Royal estates programme maker. Classical music expert and broadcaster. TV makeover designer and presenter. After dinner speaker on own life story and lecturer on various subjects . World nature TV programme presenter. Available as V.I.P celebrity opener etc. at major agricultural shows. TV chat show host (including comedien style joking as required) Past ambassador for B&Q selected outdoor product ranges. The traditional Mr Chelsea Flower Show resident presenter and chief of the programmes ' very tedious jolly banter' team. :D

Ah, yes...but celebrity clout is so important these days. If you or I tried to make a fuss it would be hard to get headlines, but when the blessed Alan pipes up it's straight on the BBC!

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is calling on Highways England to reject a plan to widen the western side of the A3, which would take 10,000 sq. metres of land from RHS Garden Wisley. This plan would destroy hundreds of beautiful trees – some of which are of significant scientific importance – and threatens the future of the garden for generations to come.
There are currently two options available to Highways England to widen the A3: one on the east side of the A3 and one on the west. The RHS has carried out expert highway studies and is calling on the Government Agency to choose the east option which does not grab woodland from the Garden, would not fell any of these important trees and would better improve road access to Wisley, which welcomes 1.2 million visitors a year.

Quite right, I hate to think what environment he'll be faced with as the end of the century approaches.
