HS4 Carb settings for 1098

Post by mobylette »

I have bought an HS4 carb & manifold, ex mini 1275, see details here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-Mini- ... true&rt=nc

I will be using original exhaust manifold with inlet removed.

Can someone advise correct spring/needle/jet to suit standard 1098 engine please & does the air filter fitted look any good?

Thanks.

I have to say - it's ridiculously expensive........... But if you must - just use whatever needle comes in the carb and see how it goes. Generally an AAA works well although some use AAU. Depends really what other mods have been done to the engine.

Thank you for the information, but please show where I can get a cheaper nearly new carb & manifold, and I will put this one back on ebay.

I see he claims to have paid £300 for it - he was well ripped off -if it's true. The HIF 38 is a better carb than the HS4 anyway.... But if you are happy with the purchase - go with it! The filter looks a bit battered - is it ok??

It makes me wonder why he spent so much on this just to scrap the car a few months later...

Mobylette
I think that you have got yourself a bargain even if the air cleaner is not perfect!
Have been on the Mini Sport web site and the HS4 with R/H float chamber is 229.42 pounds, the manifold is 29.29 pounds and the air cleaner 32.47 pounds. Total 281.18 pounds and that is on their current reduced sale prices. With your winning bid of 68.66 pounds you have saved yourself over 200 pounds. Well done.
I agree with Bmc I would try the needle already fitted to the carb and see how it goes. If it is not suitable it is easy to change the needle and they cost on average 8 pounds and are available from Mini Sport, Padiham or sucarb.co.uk/Burlen Ltd, Salisbury. Look forward to seeing a post on how you got on.

Thanks, I was getting quite depressed with all the negativity. Even the poor seller on E bay came in for some flack.

   Don't worry - it will work (don't connect the water) - it's just not what I would buy - nor the price I would be willing to pay...... At the time I didn't notice you had already bought the thing - I was trying to put you off it...

Yes, always best to read the post properly before replying. Still waiting to hear where you source your super cheap spares.

I have been looking on 'e' bay at SU carbs and yes there are some with low bids but nothing that would inspire me to purchase it. You then have to purchase a manifold and most possibly a carb overhaul kit. The money is starting to mount up and you soon reach your winning bid of 68.66 pounds and you may still have a worn carb!
Mobylette I am still convinced that you had a bargain. Good carb/manifold assemblies do not come cheap these days. Try it with and without the water hose connected to the manifold and determine which is best for you. Some cars run better with the hoses connected and some run better without being connected and good luck with the installation.

In my experience (vintage/classic motorcycles) a good carb can make a world of difference to performance and economy, and fitting an old/worn carb can cause many problems. The cost of refurbishing one can be more than the price of a new item .

I have been rebuilding a spare engine over the winter, and thought it would be nice to renew/upgrade ancillaries where my budget would stretch. I am looking forward to fitting the rebuilt engine, and hopefully enjoying a re invigorated Morris this spring ( If it ever arrives)

Well, nearly 5 years later I have finally got round to finishing the rebuild of my spare engine, and have been fitting the HS4 carb and ally manifold. I have been looking at the carb connections. I see that the HS4 has two connections on the float chamber. Is the second connection an overflow, or fuel return. If fuel return, may it be blanked off?

After a bit more googling, I think I can answer my own question, and the lower connection is an overflow. Confirmation would still be appreciated.

I think ........ the top of your float chamber .... is what I would expect to see as part of a twin carb set up and one of those connections would supply fuel to the other carb
