I used the word appears so as not to sound too dogmatic about it, maybe I should have said 'it IS a matter of opinion' instead. I'm not as forthright as yourself.

I'm not too worried about how to anneal, more bothered that I didn't know I had to! I'm in the process of a total rebuild with all new pipes and cylinders, have kept most banjos after careful cleaning and put in new correct size copper washers everywhere. I'll now dismantle what I've done and check the washers actually are copper and anneal them (quenching sounds more fun, so I'll go down that route). How long have I got before they need doing again - I'm not thinking weeks, but if I do them as a batch are they ok for a few days before fitting?

The new washers should not need annealing but better if they are annealed before fitting. The annealed washers will stay in the annealed state for a long time so no need to rush to fit.
