Engine lifting brackets

Post by GavinL »

Hi, Can someone with these please confirm the dimensions and hole size for the lifting stud, I'm making a pair out of 3" x 1/4" steel angle which I assume should be up to the job.

Thanks.

Length of foot..............................................1 1/2". The foot is radiused at the other end from the upstanding.

Hole dia in foot for rocker cover stud..............7/16". The size of this hole allows for use of the bracket(s) on the 3/8" dia head stud(s).

Bottom of hole in upstanding........................1 3/8".

Width of upstanding hole................................7/8". The top of the upstanding hole is radiused with the bottom of the
upstanding hole radiused in the corners

Length of upstanding...................................3 1/2". The top of the upstanding is radiused.

To be honest I would not even consider making a pair but would buy a pair.

Quite. - Particularly as a pair seem to sell for about a fiver secondhand.

Many thanks Phil, much appreciated. I take your point about buying, but as i have the angle lying around, and the means to drill and machine the holes, they won't take me long to make. I can then combine it with a suitable spreader bar that will match up with my chain hoist, for which i have some suitable 50mm x 5mm angle - for me part of the fun is making jigs / tools to use on my cars. :D

I have one of the adjustable leveling bars that goes between the hoist and the engine. It has four small chains attached to it, with an L shaped bracket on the end of them, that fit under the rocker studs nicely.

A really useful piece of kit, and if you ever pull the engine leaving the gearbox in the car then it makes the job much easier, as the engine has to tilt back at a fair angle to get an initial postion and then be gradully leveled while being fed back onto the gearbox - all while making sure you don't ping the clutch release bearing apart, really annoying !, or worse bend the input shaft.

In reverse Haynes words - removal is simply the reverse of refitting
