So I've removed Vanessa's fuel tank, which externally looks ok with only minor rust, but internally looks pretty rusty.
Normally I would swill the tank with stones, marbles, etc to clean, but with the baffles I don't see this would work in this case, also is there any way to get at the filter on the suction line to clean it?

Hard to tell from the photos how bad the tank is. I got a new one for about £140 a few years back.

I've had good luck with a product similar to this one. I don't remember the brand name of the one I used. You can buy the smaller kit for motorcycles which will work fine for the Morris tank.
There are you tube's to watch, and the process is a bit tedious, but not difficult.
I'm in the US, so look for similar kits on your side of the ocean.

Re: Fuel tank how to clean, or is it too far gone?
I had this problem when I bought my 54 splittie 3 years ago. I had previously read that ordinary household vinegar was a good rust remover. Chucked two ltrs, left it overnight and then gave it a good shake. Lots of muck came out. Now when i visually check my in line filter, it is as clean as a whistle. My tank level is usually quite low before i refill.

Bill.

Thanks Bill. Yes I use vinegar a lot for derusting small items, so if I can get a couple of gallons easily I'll give it a try. I was then going to try sealing the tank with Slosh http://www.rust.co.uk/slosh-ethanol-res ... al/p405062. Which I've read reasonable reviews of, the only problem is it would block the filter in the tank, but I could replace this with an inline filter, as long as I can remove the filter in the tank, which looks pretty cruddy anyway.

I advise against this. this is the stuff I sealed my tank with years ago and the modern fuel ate through it.
hence my trouble now with my tank.

I think tank sealant is now available which copes with the modern petrol. If the sealant blocks the intake filter blow compressed air through before the sealant sets.

just an update. I binned my troublesome fuel tank a couple of weeks ago. I have had a new tank made from 304 stainless so wont have any rust issues anymore.
