vinyl seat paint ideas?

Post by 1mustard »

Hi, i have a red vinyl interior on my 66 traveller that the colour has faded on (usual!) the rear seat is good, i have had one of the bases replaced on one of the front seats, basically i need to revive the colour on the front seats, i know there is some paints that can be used, so i would like to hear from anyone who has done this or tried it with good or bad results, i am thinking of trying some red polish on them possibly dye before i try paint as i don't want to make them look worse.
The paint is approx £20 a can on ebay i can't find it anywhere else, also i want good as possible colour match.
Any info, dos, donts, please let me know.
Thanks

There's a thread here from someone who painted their seats with a kit from Woolies. Looks pretty good:

I think the prepping is the important part and various products are available from companies like Woolies or Frosts.

Frost sell red vinyl paint:

Woolies can mix vinyl paint to order but you need to buy a few cans:

Thanks i have just recieved a sample from woolies today, however to get paint matched you have to order 4 cans, for £100, which is more than i want to commit to, thanks i will explore the other avenues, it would be nice to be able to get my hands on some good samples.
thanks

thought you may be interested to know, i have sent woolies a sample of my seat material, and they are making me up 4 cans of paint, 1 primer, 1 cleaner, £111 all in inc delivery, which isn't too bad, to be honest the car looks amazing and these are the last things to be done, in for a penny in for a pound!

not sure if anyone is interested, but i have finished painting my seats/door cards and the end result is amazing, honestly the colour match is perfect, this has to be some of the best money i have ever spent, i would recommend this to anyone, one of the seats has had a new base and you cannot tell the difference, it has covered stains/marks, and turned my white/pink/red seats back to the original colour, the trick is clean well, take your time, and dust off over spray between coats, also wear a spray mask its fumey stuff.
cheers

as you say great colour match..

i was always sceptical that vinyl paint would last until I ripped apart some black seats only to find inside the seams that they started life as blue seats.. so from personal experience they should continue to look great..

you can tell it will last, just by touching it, it is strange how it works but was £111 well spent when you look at the bigger picture, how much for new seat covers, door cards etc? it is a no brainer really and the amount i have spent on the car so far it would have been a bit silly cutting corners on the seats, you have to budget best part of £500-1000 on the interior, when restoring these cars.
cheers
