Sandun - NO POINT bleeding the brakes till you repair the sticking rear cylinders - do that first!

Sandun - you need to address the problems you have with your wheel cylinders BEFORE you start bleeding the brakes and removing the master cylinder. If the car has not been used for 6 months, the most likely cause of your problems is with the wheel cylinders. Check, free off (if possible) and (if not possible to free off) replace each cylinder which isn't working. Once you have done this, clean the drums with some fine emery paper to remove any surface rust but do not breathe in the brake dust. Re-fit the drums and adjust the cam so that the brakes lock on and you cannot turn the wheel, then slacken off one click so the wheel will turn with just a small amount of resisitance from the shoes. NOW bleed the brakes starting farthest away from the master cylinder and working towards it (so passenger rear side, driver rear side, passender front, driver side front - for a RHD car). Do not remove the bleed screw entirely, just open it up enough to let fluid pass. Have a friend press the brake pedal for you whilst you go round the car.

Attach a small tube to the bleed nipple and place the other end into a jar about 1/4 full of fresh brake fluid. Follow this next procedure carefully for all wheel cylinders - 1. Open up bleed screw with pipe attached. 2. Get friend to press brake pedal to floor. When pedal at the floor ask him to say 'down' and ask him to hold the pedal in the down position. 3. Air and fluid should now pass through tube into jar. Once air/fluid stops flowing, tighten the bleed screw. 4. once bleed screw is locked off say 'up' and ask your friend to release the brake pedal. Complete steps 1-4 two or three times per cylinder or more if necessary. DON'T forget to top up the master cylinder with fresh fluid after each cylinder otheriwse you will be pumping more air into the system.

After you have completed all cylinders, check what sort of brake pedal you have - it should be firm and you should not be able to press it to the floor. If you can, check to make sure that no fluid is leaking from the cylinders or bleed nipples. If no fluid leaking, repeat steps 1-4 again and re-check. If you still get no pedal, THEN start to think about taking the master cylinder out - not before :-)

Good luck and come back to us to let us know how you got on :-)

Do the (new) rear brake cylinders need priming with some brake fluid before fitting?
