Sorry - didn't mean to mislead. The nearside is fine, its the offside that is the problem. The near side is fine.

It's almost like the offside is sticking - but it is still moving even when the brake looses efficiency.

The End??

Post by plg422d »

Just to say thanks to everyone who offered advice.

I couldn't find anything wrong so adjusted the brakes up and went back for a retest and it passed.

Still at a lose as to why this happened but will keep a close eye over the next month.

If it looses its effectiveness again then I'll replace the shoes, springs and cylinder....

Almost certainly the cylinder is completly seized.
not possible - the footbrake is working fine.
The footbrake works the inner and outer piston. The handbrake only works the outer piston, therefore that isn't the problem.

Bear in mind that pulling the handbrake only gives a finite amount of travel, therefore if there is too much slack in the cable on one side, the brake won't operate on that side.
Most likely cause of a failed handbrake, (when footbrake still works) is the cable being siezed. If it's not seized, then it's either broken/ badly adjusted or the end fittings are not done up properly (or broken) allowing the sheathing to move.

Seriously though - you have to be systematic. If the footbrake works, then it can only relate to the cable side.
