Thee is a noticeable whine with 1st & reverse - but a grinding noise isn't good...why do my gears grind when i let the clutch out?
1st gear is "straight cut" spur gears. These are much noisier than 2nd and 3rd gears which have "S" shaped teeth (top is straight through - no gear train).
Reverse is the same as 1st.
You have checked that there is oil in the gearbox?

I have a "bad" left leg and find the floor mounted dip switch difficult for me to reach on the Moggie I bought the other day.
Luckilly I've also a 1956 A35 and was given a A40 for spares along with the rest of about 5 other A40's. I now have several A40 steering column switches and hopefully one should easilly fit the Morris.
Same indicator with green light on one side as Morris but light switch on other side. Not the same as most cars but it's the master light switch - off, side, dipped, main. Rotary with lever for finger operation. I've yet to switch, on the A35, from dipped to side instead of main to dipped - which was my initial worry.
I've got two types to choose from - early and late. The early is nice as it's alloy instead of plastic so I can see me spending time polishing one before attempting fitting

Do the gears actually grind or could it be a very noisy clutch bearing, the gears should not grind at all unless you are trying to change into 1st while still moving.oh and why do my gears grind when i let the clutch out?
Cheers

Gears
The gears grind when the car is stationary and i want to set off.
When i put it into first only sometimes it grinds but will still let me pull away and then the noise will go away but a nasty burning smell hits me afterwards???

It sounds like there might be a problem with the clutch, if you try a hill start and try to pull away and the revs rise faster than the car is going and then catch up, this is a sign of clutch slip.

clutch
Check the free play on the clutch pedal, it should be 3/4" for early models
and 1+1/2" for the later types. If there is too much play it would explain the
crunch when stationary.

There is a rod on the clutch arm with a locknut to enable adjustment it underneath on the drivers side of the gearbox with a spring attached, it might be a good idea to get a manual as this will help explain lots of bits and pieces.
