pistons

Post by phil63 »

I am "doing up" a 1275 Midget engine ,removing the pistons is a problem . The gudgeon pins are tight on the rods and move in the pistons . no circlips and no clamps . What is the correct way to remove the pins ? not hammering them , I guess . I tried a long bolt and a distance piece but they would not shift !

Some gudgoen pins are fitted using the heat shrink method. I dont know if this applies to the midget.

Yes - it does. They are an extremely tight interference fit in the connecting rod. I made up a screw 'press' - and manged to remove some old knackered pistons from my con rods (with some help from a gas blow lamp) - but I would not like to risk fitting expensive new pistons. I have heard that by immersing the con rod end in a bath of molten solder - and keeping the gudgeon pin in the freezer until the last minute - it can be done without a press, but I have never tried it. I suggest this is best left to experts who have the right equipment.
