What is usually the reason for the control box contacts to get stuck in the closed position?
Needless to say I need another dynamo now....

If you were fiddling with the control box at the time then you could have
closed them. The dynamo cut-in points will not release on their own if
closed when the the engine is not running which means that the dynamo is
trying to act as a motor and will burn out if the points are not separated. Otherwise points could have fused together because they need a good cleaning or, worse, something is
causing excessive current drain which is causing heavy arcing at the points.
