I know it may sound untrue but the vxr engine with a larger turbo and a remap is an easy 300bhp
The other is the xe engine with about £5000 spent on it will produce 450 bhp it's looking like I am going towards this one what would you do

It's all about producing useable power in your chassis - too much can be a problem. If car is built to suit, then 450 is fine - if not, then even 300 may be too much. I'd rather have a V8 in any case, cheaper too :D

I can think of many better uses for five grand.
Even if it has super car power I doubt it will out perform one.

I take what your saying I have done the v8 also a very heavy Essex v6 but this is something I have been thinking about for many years . The chassis should be able to handle it I built it 30 years ago and is still like new it has a jag rear axle the only thing I am not sure about is I have a 5th wheel on the back and I will mount my fuel tank as far back as i can and lorry battery will this be enough to get the rubber down the 5th wheel is for the 27ft mini artic trailer but won't be on it at Santa pod. I am on the search for a limited slip diff[frame]Image[/frame]

Jag power lock diffs are readily available as you are no doubt aware of, but I'd suggest an engine built more for torque to handle towing a large trailer.
Decent tyres will make a huge difference to traction, but weight is a killer for the quarter mile. A passenger carried costs about .3 of a second.
