Problems with retaining log-in

In the last couple of days, my sign-in isn't being retained. If I enter my log in details I get the usual message saying I've been successfully logged in but when I return to the index page, my automatic login has been lost. Grateful if someone could advise how to sort?

I could be wrong, but I do believe there is a tick box that needs to be selected for your login to continually work.

Yes there is a tick box ticked which is always ticked, that's why I'm surprised it no longer seems to be working as before
