Hi all

I need some help sourcing some bits for the battery holder for my Traveller (1969). When doing some work on her, I rather idiotically stripped out the Spithole Grommet, Seal and Insulator Mat from the battery case under the bonnet. Even more idiotically, I didn't keep them, and am now trying to replace them.

I've rung every supplier I can think of (Moss Europe, Jag Spares, Charles Ware etc) but noone seems to have any of these. Does anyone know anyone who might have some? All suggestions/ideas very welcome!

Looking in the BMC parts list a grommet for the spit holes does not appear to be listed.
I am pretty certain that the spit hole on my Minor was covered by a piece of bitumen covered material.

For the base and rear of the battery I have used an offcut of pvc floor covering. If it is trimmed carefully to the battery dimensions it is not noticeable and the battery and clamp holds it in place. Along the clamp bar I have a piece of bicycle inner tube.

As Phil suggests, the large grommet was not fitted to cars of that age. They had a sheet of black plastic glued over the area.
It was only fairly early cars which were fitted with the grommet as I recall. There should be two grommets which act as stops for the battery however - I expect you have 2 small hoses in the rear of the battery box, quite high up. Something to do that job should be easy enough to find.
There must be at least 20 Minor Specialists who supply parts for these cars - you just have to keep trying. I wouldn't think there is anything which cannot be obtained frankly with a bit of effort.

It's also been suggested to me to paint the battery bay in acid resistant paint. Do you think that's worth doing?

Paint the battery box in acid resistant paint and sit the battery on a acid neutralizer pad in a battery box/tray with sides.
Coat the battery terminals in battery terminal grease.

I just riveted a piece of 16swg steel in mine (I thought it would be safer if ever there was an engine bay fire). My battery sits in a plastic tray, on an acid neutralising mat. It's a small sealed battery, of the type used in the Mazda MX5.
