Halogen headlamp out on one side on full but dipped fine!

Post by mxlynseyharrison »

Hi!
I’m a complete newbie to the boards and this is my first post, so please bare with me if this has been covered before. I have recently purchased a set of halogen headlamps from ESM, which are a direct replacement for the standard bulbs. One works absolutely fine, but the other only works whilst dipped and not on full beam. I have checked the lamp and it’s not a fault with that as it works fine when swapped around into the other headlight. Does anyone have any suggestions of what it could be, and if it’s potentially an easy fix for a novice, or would you recommend taking it into a garage? Many thanks in advance :D

Certainly NOT a garage job....

Did it work before you made the change?
Have you brought the kit with all the bits?

You've done the first logical thing by swapping the lamp over, so you know the lamp is OK.
You know the earth connection is OK as it's common to Dip and Main beam.
So the problem lies with the Blue/Red wire and it's connections, and only going to that side from the point where it splits which if memory serves, and not going out to the garage to look, is on the Drivers Inner Wing.
Chances are there's just a poor connection on the existing wiring loom where you've disturbed it.

Do you have a multi-meter or even a lamp you could use as a test lamp?
If not just have a wiggle of the connections and see what happens...

Blue/red wire is the dipped beam, blue/white is the main beam, so if main is not working, then it's the blue/white that you need to check. Most likely a loose connection at either the lamp holder or in the engine bay where the lamp harness joins the main harness.

Opps
Simmitc is right of course, I misread the post and thought it was Dip that was the problem.
