q In October 1954, the face-lifted Series II Traveller was launched alongside the revised specification saloons and convertibles. New features included the dash with central speedometer and externally, new horizontal
grille bars in place of the cheesegrater grille. The early Series II Traveller is rarely seen today and is highly sought after by Minor enthusiasts. The Club Register has a record of only 72 worldwide of which 19 are currently taxed in the UK, four are on SORN and 22 located overseas. The remainder and some of the overseas ones may no longer be in existence. Some 200 of the later version are recorded as having existed sometime in the last 10 years.
My own interest in the Series II Traveller began in 1983 when I bought a January 1954 Empire Green one which had previously been owned by Club President, John Frye, and was registered as PPO 924. At that time and for several years later, it was believed to be the
oldest surviving Traveller. We tidied it up and used it regularly for club events including the second MOT visit to the Netherlands in 1984 and various visits to MMCN camping weekends laden with camping gear for the family and loads of spares for the Dutch owners. Later,
it underwent a more detailed restoration when new
wood was fitted along with a 1098 engine and modified gearbox and was used to tow a small caravan to club rallies. Shortly after buying PPO, I took charge of the
club Series II Traveller register that I kept on my Amstrad computer and looked after for several years. The current Registrar is Phillip Traves who is always pleased to receive information about Series II Travellers you own or may have owned in the past or even see while out.
