Re: Won't start

Yeah I allowed for a cold engine - but isn't the issue the variation between them rather than the reading? I'm working on the premise that buying the bits won't be dear, and i might need them at some point - i can only work on her on a weekend as i don't have a garage and if i do the service and she...

Re: Won't start

So i did a compression test - admittedly on a cold engine - but there's something wrong - front to back we got 155 125 125 155, did them twice and got the same again.

So now I'm assuming lots of work?

Re: Won't start

I think the TLC response may sum it up - lots of little faults mean I'm buying new gaskets for the carb, a new dizzy cap some new leads and plugs and a new air filter, and then trying again! The inline filter was put in to deal with a fuel evaporation issue, but i will replace that too. The chamber ...

Won't start

For a few days, Lily struggled to start - lots of whirring and then only firing eventually. I assumed this must be the starter motor, however she also had a tendency to cut out a few hundred yards down the road before starting again. I've recently replaced the battery, and generally she was running ...

Re: Gear box

Thanks all for the advice I've located a second hand gear box from our local minor specialist, taken from a car that is going to scrap shortly at about half the price of a fully recon one, which i'd struggle to afford right now - so i will have a broken one to sell on shortly if anyone needs a donor...

Re: Gear box

He'll probably have to, or i could use the oxford MM place - it's beyond my limited abilities! I hadn't really thought about a second hand option to be honest. The real problem i guess is not being able to tell how bad the existing one is until it comes apart and if it is bad then sourcing a new box...

Gear box

The basic stuff - 1098, 67 standard (no mods)! Sounds like the bearings have gone in the gearbox - put it this way, there is a loud grinding / rattling in 3rd and 4th and we are now struggling to get into second. The rattling is also there in neutral though..... Obviously, she is now off the road, s...

Detailing paint colours

Hi does anyone know if there are specific shades of white for wheels and the front grille? And am I ok to do these by hand, once I've cleaned, unrusted, treated the rust and primed? And is there a specific red for the bonnet handle? I'm finally - once the insurance sorts it - having a new rear wing ...

Re: sheared screws

I've ended up replacing the lens part myself and given the garage the receipt. It's a temporary fix so at least people can see me indicating and braking in the few days I need to use the car before she goes in for the bodywork. So the insurance will be paying for it! The garage can then advise me if...

Re: sheared screws

Ah, sorry I wasn't clear - the screw is sheared at the base point - so where you screw the lens into the chrome bit, it's sheared into the actual chrome base.

I think I might have to buy a whole new chrome fitting and replace the whole unit.

sheared screws

As a very nice lady rear ended me last week, I am now doing the bits of repairs I need to keep Lily on the road until the new rear wing and bumper can be fitted next week. Don't worry they are still solid on the car, just dented. Anyway, I have just gone to replace the broken rear light fitting, the...

Why is my windscreen so dirty?

Ok - obvious things first - we have two new blades on, so it's not blade wear. I do seem to only have intermittent screenwash supply from one of the two jets, so if anyone knows why that might be, feel free to chip in! (But I have recently had a new screenwash pump put in) The real issue is that bas...

Blowy exhaust

I noticed we have sounded a little more blowy than usual and had a clamber under the car as much as I could on a wet drive The join where the rear of the fat bit of the exhaust goes into narrower pipe seems to be blowing air out. When the exhaust is cold, the join seems good, though a bit uneven, wh...

Re: engine oil leak and more strange rattlings

Only BMEcosse's explanation - like I said it was only a couple of times pulling away in second - but it was boneshaking, and there was a loss of power - I've found a place that does vintage cars very local to me to get another opinion. I got oil into her within about 3 miles, but the damage may have...

Re: engine oil leak and more strange rattlings

Thank you as ever my learned Scottish friend. The oil had got low which has made me very angry, as she'd had a service 5 weeks ago and I was assured the oil had been topped up and I can't see how she's lost that much oil in 5 weeks with no obvious leak - I've had cardboard under the car for 3 days n...

engine oil leak and more strange rattlings

As a starting point - the car is running basically well, except for the following issues which I need your input on. Firstly - we seem to have started getting through a fair whack of oil - though having just moved and not having checked the new drive first, I can't see if there is an obvious leak. I...

As Lily and I have moved, who do people recommend as a garage in the Oxford area?

Re: fuse boxes and failed lights

Working - headlights, indicators, brake lights

not working - rear lights, side lights, speedo light

trying to decide - fuel gauge

So, i'll be looking at how to remove the speedo now!

Re: fuse boxes and failed lights

i think the sidelights are out too - which looking at the very low res wiring diagram suggests a single blown fuse - but my addled brain can't work out a) which one (although i've swapped the inline and the left hand vertical one in the fuse box which restored the horn and interior lights) - which i...

Re: fuse boxes and failed lights

i'm not to be trusted with a heat source, and it's got to have had half a can of lubricant on it.

To be honest i'm still more annoyed that i can't get the rear lights and speedo light to work
