Re: Smoking / dodgy start / revving on its own

Thanks for the reply. Don't think the throttle is sticking and certainly looks more like smoke than steam. Smells a little burnt?

Smoking / dodgy start / revving on its own

Bit of an odd one as this is either the same issue or multiple different issues. Last week or so I've had a few issues when driving. If I depress the clutch the car will cut out or get very close to cutting out. Then the other day we set off for work and had to stop for petrol, car wouldn't 'start' ...

Re: Oil Filter Warning Light

:D Thank you both, I came to the same conclusion last night. I think the light's been on for over a week and we've driven it (thinking it was a faulty filter light) with no bad engine sounds, seems as smooth as it usually is. I've ordered the switch, should be here tomorrow, fingers crossed that sol...

Re: Oil Filter Warning Light

Thank you both, I'll take a look at the alternator to see if any things catching.

In regards to the light, if it's oil pressure is that a rebuild required? Gauge kits seem quite expensive but I'll try and get one asap.

Oil Filter Warning Light

I am not sure whether to post this in this section or electrical, I apologise if it's in the wrong place. I also put this on Facebook but haven't quite got to the bottom of it. My oil filter warning light sometimes comes on. By this I mean it will be someway into a journey and only flicker, usually ...

In the dip beam switch, apparently there was some resistance and a couple of loose wires, sorted that and it's worked ever since.
As an aside, the heating is blooming fab.

Re: Just bought car, switched headlights, car cut out -Not Fixed

All sorted. Got an auto electrician to have a look and sorted the short. Been driving around since yesterday and at night with headlights on with no problems.
Love it!

Re: Just bought car, switched headlights and car cut out - Fixed

I spoke too soon!
Just started the car and let it warm up, flicked the headlights on which came on, put in gear and started to set off when poop, dead, again.
No electrics other than horn and interior light, engine cut out, no dash lights, nothing.

Can't be the control box again, can it?

Re: Just bought car, switched headlights and car cut out - Fixed

Cheers Nick, Al and Bob. Hopefully everything remains a two minute job, though experience with my VW suggests that is almost never the case. Fortunately in this instance it was. The car is pretty sorted as is at the minute but I'll be sticking around as I may get another for me, but a bit of a proje...

Re: Five years later and I've bought my first Moggy

Not sure why but I can't upload pictures through the forum so had to use photo bucket links. Only took a few as the weather is crap. http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z468/Scrubbydal/DSC_0584.jpg http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z468/Scrubbydal/DSC_0585.jpg http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z...

Re: Just bought car - turned headlights on and car cut out

Fixed it. Two minute job. Replaced the control box and bob's your uncle it starts and all the electrics are back. Found the culprit: http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z468/Scrubbydal/64aff489734279272f1775445562e9a6.jpg And she's home. http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z468/Scrubbydal/106434f9-...

Re: Just bought car - turned headlights on and car cut out

Going to head down shortly but I found a thread from 2013 with the exact same problem we had last night, so I have a feeling this will do it: Yes - join A and A1 - just take the cable out of A1 terminal - and put it in A alongside the brown wire. The connection inside the reg box may have failed. Th...

Re: Just bought car - turned headlights on and car cut out

Thank you for your replies, I'll have a good read up tonight and try to get up to speed quickly. I've done a fair bit of work on my VW so not adverse to having a go. As for giving the seller a hand, I don't mind as it gives me a chance to get to know these engines, if we can't sort it then I can wal...

Re: Just bought car - turned headlights on and car cut out

Re: Just bought car - turned headlights on and car cut out

This car is still on the sellers drive so no issue with the sale. Battery checked and has a voltage. Fuses checked and seemingly fine.
Car is completely dead other than horn and interior light. No ignition lights, not starting, dead?

It was idling, headlights switched and boom, dead.
