Driving a Morris Minor in the Targa Rally 2019
Last October, I had the exciting experience of entering my 1961 4-door Morris Minor in the New Zealand Targa Rally , and I thought I should write a post about it. Also scroll down for a couple of videos! We entered the "Tour", which is an event where you bring your road car and drive the c...

Re: Front Trunnion Horizontal Pin End Play
Follow Up to the Follow Up... After a few hundred miles, the rattle came back. :( It's not nearly as bad as it was, and sounds like it's only on the left side. I am sticking by my theory (above) that it's the top trunnion rocking on its thread as the wheel passes over small bumps. I suspect dubious ...

Re: Front Trunnion Horizontal Pin End Play
Sorry for the long overdue update to this issue, but I have finally got back to working on the front suspension. Hopefully the info will be useful. I decided that it needed new kingpins and trunions anyway, so I have replaced them along with various other work. Here is what I did, and my findings. N...

Re: Front Trunnion Horizontal Pin End Play
Thanks for the info... I hadn't got around to looking at it again due to trying to fix carb issues. So I had a look at the tie rods. They were in fact pretty loose due to the rubbers being a bit old. I packed things out with a couple of washers to tighten them up (will need to order some more rubber...

Re: Front Trunnion Horizontal Pin End Play
Yeah I'm pretty sure I've eliminated everything else; there are new rubbers in the tie bars and the Armstrongs were recently reconditioned and are definitely well bolted down. I can't feel any play in the rack ends (ie jacking up and wiggling the wheels). Just got the new kingpins and trunnions. Wit...

Re: Front Trunnion Horizontal Pin End Play
So at 0.3 mm - 0.4 mm end play, do you notice any rattles? I have a new set of kingpins and trunnions on order, and when I fit them, I'd like to eliminate the rattle. I should say that they don't rattle on good roads, even on big bumps... it's only small sharp bumps like pot holes. But the last coup...

Re: Front Trunnion Horizontal Pin End Play
Interesting... I have in my collection 2 x brand new pins, 2 x old used pins, and 3 x old lower trunnions. Here are my measurements with calipers, probably accurate to 0.02 mm: New Pins: 51.00 51.00 Old Pins: 50.30 49.98 Old Trunnions: 50.58 50.26 49.82 So quite a bit of variation. The trunnions are...

Front Trunnion Horizontal Pin End Play
Hi, I've replaced front kingpins and/or bottom trunnions on two Morris Minors, and both times I've noticed that the new trunnions have considerable end float in the horizontal swivel pin, even when bolted together tightly. See position of the feeler gauge in the attached photo - in this case it's ab...

Re: Hello: Valve guide removal/install tool
Hi, I have read this thread with interest as I needed to do some head work on my latest acquisition - barn find, hasn't run for 30 years. Some of the valves were stuck, and after dismantling, I found that one of the exhaust valves is a bit burnt (small melted spot) and others have carbon build up on...

56 Split-Screen Coupe BARN FIND!
Look what I just bought!! (collecting tomorrow, all going well). It's a 56 split screen coupe with the 800 cc engine, which has sat in a garage under a house since the late 70s. The seller had inherited it from the original owner, it was only driven on weekends, and she was sure the mileage is the i...

Re: Air/Fuel Ratio Variable
Certainly sounds like it could be the wrong needle in your carb. The ideal A/F ratio is 14.7:1. But I've no experience of what you'd actually get in the real world. Get the right needle and see what effect it has on your readings! Out of interest, where did you get this sensor kit, and how much was...

Re: Air/Fuel Ratio Variable
Your readings sound pretty much perfect to me - leaning out when 'on the cruise' and richer when accelerating. Does the pinking go away if you use premium fuel?? Just run the tank down and then try a couple of gallons. Any idea what mechanical advance is in the dizzy? And is the vacuum advance conn...

Air/Fuel Ratio Variable
Hi! I've been getting a bit of pinking at full throttle between 3,000 - 4,000 rpm. I've twiddled with the timing a lot, but it wasn't effective until it got very retarded (1-2 deg BTDC at 450 RPM). For a bit of fun, I bought an Air/Fuel ratio gauge and installed it. It uses an oxygen sensor which I ...

Re: Brakes...
Well, after removing the drums I found that all drums and shoes are showing signs of use (drums were ground and shoes replaced 1600 miles ago). All wheel cylinders are free and working fine. The adjustments could have been a little tighter though. Next step is taking it to someone who has a proper b...

Re: Brakes...
Hmm, this is turning into a damper thread instead! I actually drained, flushed and refilled them already. I used 10W/30 because that was the thickest oil I could find (maybe I should try some chainsaw bar lube...!). One was empty, and (surprise surprise) that one leaked after I put it back on. So I ...

Re: Brakes...
Interesting reading this as my brakes have been a little difficult too. I found bleeding them to be very easy (by myself) - just used a 1-man bleeder kit which is a little bottle that magnets onto the drum and has a pipe going to the bleed nipple. Inside the bottle the pipe goes to the bottom so tha...

1962 4-Door FINISHED Plus Great British Car Rally
I say finished, but of course this sort of project is never finished! So after 3 years 9 months of having this thing completely dismantled in my shed, it's back on the road! Here's a before Pic: [frame] http://mmoc.org.uk/mbimage.php?src=1362179082_11328 [/frame] It was going to be a quick job, but ...

Temperature Sender Location on 948
Hi, I'm thinking of adding a temperature gauge to my 948 engine (1962), which never had one. I have a nice little gauge and sender left over from another project. Is there a standard location in the 948 block for the sender (i.e. a hole with a plug in it)? I note that there is something like that ju...
