Re: 57 Saloon, rotten!
Can I ask where you got your boot aperture panel from as it looks a decent fit. The one I just bought is about 10mm narrower than the back of my car!

Re: Compression test results
I'm not going to run it with that head on - it's a refurbed head so I know it has no issues. I thought maybe I should use it for testing while I'm cleaning my one up. My theory is that if I know those valves are okay, then that takes one variable out of the equation. I think the results I got today ...

Re: Compression test results
I've taken the head off today and there was a ridge of carbon/oil in the thin strip between pots 2&3. There was a lightly scored ring about an inch down from the top of pot 1. No lips at the top or vertical scoring anywhere. I have a good mpi head here so after cleaning put that head on, did the...

Compression test results
I think my 1098 is running on three cylinders. There is also an irregular knocking noise coming from somewhere even at idle. I have checked the ignition and reset the valves. No difference so did a compression test this morning: throttle open, plugs out and engine cold. The results were: 1=150, 2>14...

Re: Odd Sparking Problem
Thanks for the replies. I bought the dizzy from a well-known supplier on Ebay; yes, dale it has the red rotor arm. I've tried it with three different arms that I know work, a new cap, new leads all without success. Asked the seller about it who wasn't very helpful other than telling me that it's pro...

Odd Sparking Problem
Has anyone come across this before? I replaced my dizzy with an electronic one (yeah, I know what people are going to say) and it was fine but the car then started to run worse and worse until it packed up. On investigating, there is a no spark - unless you unclip the distributor cap and separate it...

Dipstick Question
Can anyone tell me how to remove the dipstick tube please? The block is off to be rebored and I don't want to destroy the bottom of the tube in transit or in my cackhanded attempts to get it off

Re: Piston question
Thanks for the advice, Roy. The crank journals are cutting up a bit where the bearings' oil channels block are so I think this is sound advice. Still works out cheaper than ESM's recon block and I can do it in stages as and when the cash becomes available.

Re: Piston question
I thought £120 was reasonable in view of the fact that the only other company who gave me a quote wanted £145 + £220 if I wanted pistons as well. I can only go on the info I have available. There is a lip at the top of the bore and quite a nasty scratch is the cylinder so I think I will get it rebor...

Re: Piston question
Looks like the other pistons are fine. I've noticed that the top ring on this one has closed and it is tight around the piston. Does any one know the cause of that please? I'm always this curious with tradesmen, too - what's this? why are you doing that?

Re: Piston question
I've been quoted £120 for a rebore, which is a lot cheaper than ESM's recon block even though I'll need new pistons (which I guess I do anyway). At least I won't need to worry about that for a while.

Re: Piston question
Thanks for the good news Does anyone have a ballpark figure for a rebore or a recommended machine shop (I'm in Hampshire).
I'm a bit wary of buying another engine as I've already done that once and it was a dog.

Re: Piston question
Looking at it properly, there is a lot of scoring on one side and about half as much directly opposite. On the side that is lightly scored there is a fair bit of piston crown damage that I assume is caused by pinking. On opposite side of the crown is a smaller amount of crown damage. Hope that makes...

Piston question
I'm stripping down my 1098 engine that burns oil like it costs nothing. I've taken one piston out and had a look at it: it is badly scored as if it's been scraped down a brick wall! Would the smoking and the scored pistons be related? The bore has some very faint vertical lines that I'm sure w...

Many thanks for all the advice. The timing cover looks remarkably straight and the gasket is absolutely glued to it
