Re: fume vent dumping oil
Or.. you could find a cannister breather system which was fitted to the later 10V type engines which should enable the oil to find its way back to the sump.

1275 Gearbox rebuild
I am currently trying to rebuild a 1275 Midget gearbox. I have previously successfully rebuilt several 1098's and a few 948's. The 3rd motion shaft, however, is of different construction to the Minor boxes. I am stuck with the remaining parts as shown in the photo - which don't want to budge. I am c...

Re: Wanted ,petrol pump points ,
That is a 'Hardi' pump, the one mentioned by Declan is probably the 'electronic' version. I have 'resurrected' a few of these pumps, as there tends to be more material on the points carriers than is the case with the SU pump points. You should be able to re-use them if you carefully re-face them on ...

Re: Embarrasingly stupid question about alternator
Powerspark do a cheaper one (probably Chinese!) and I bought one for my project convertible (fitted but un-tested as yet) they are about £130. Would be interested to know if anyone else has had one and how it worked. I must say, I haven't had a 100% record with other stuff from them so I do have my ...

Re: Releasing torsion bar
I have such a jig, fashioned from some old bits of scrap metal. It holds the top and bottom arms steady, taking the tension while you remove the bottom pin safely and then gradually unwind it - safely releasing the spring. (I did try to upload a photo but it didn't work?)

So, as you now wont have any room for luggage, you will have to take the black Traveller as well!

Re: Flasher unit or relay
Hi Russ
Branch spares have sold quite a few of the SWT122 Lucas (pos or neg earth) flasher cans (from ESM) £9 I think? One or two of the cheaper ones have found their way back, (dead) however.

Re: Door bottom repairs
Yes it is a good idea to strip the doors first since the glass is easily damaged. The rear doors come apart a bit easier than the fronts. You need to strip off the handles and door liner card from the inside, remove the lock (4 countersunk phillips screws) and the catch at the rear (4 round head phi...

Re: starter fault ?
I had a similar problem recently, after changing the solenoid it turned out to be a loose battery earth terminal. Also, a friend had an apparently random 'flat battery' causing intermittent starting issues which turned out to be timing too far advanced.

Re: Bonnet prop.
I don't understand the logic behind that one. Surely the bonnet is rotating in the same plane, just a larger angle. How can that put extra strain on the hinges such that snapping is a danger? Agreed, the hinges are not the most over-engineered bits of the Minor, but they should cope with the forces ...

I am the bonnet prop contact. Sorry to hear you have had trouble contacting me. The email in Minor Matters (ie minorbonnet@gmail.com) is set up to fire off an instant reply giving the buying details. I just thought it would be better than filling the ad with them. If you still have no joy, pm me and...

Re: COIL CONNECTIONS
I had faithfully adopted the mantra 'Its never the coil', but I helped out a branch member last weekend whose recently restored car coughed and spluttered for a few days then refused to start. So we replaced the condenser, the plugs, plug leads, distributor cap, rotor arm and points. Nothing, but th...

It was a short circuit on the car I was talking about. He was altering the wiring on the light switch with the battery connected and it burnt out the link in the control box!

Re: Shorting/earth issue help needed!
A friend had a similar sounding problem recently. The cause was the link in the voltage regulator between A and A1 had burnt out. See if you have a voltage reading on both A and A1. It is probably true that a short circuit has caused this however, so you will still need to find this.

Re: Gear stick movement
Here is a pic of the two types of gearlever. Its difficult to identify if you have the wrong one, but a 948 one in a 1098 box made me think there was something wrong with reverse. The correct lever cured it.[frame][/frame]

I helped one of our branch members fit one some months ago using the feet as you say. One person laying on their back inside the car, the other outside with the washing line cord and lots of lube!
