I don't know HOW I didn't notice that! Clearly, they are just metrically marked... I'll contact a supplier tomorrow and see if they can find the proper rings.
Cheers Roy!

Re: Piston Help Please!
I have measured the pistons, and found them to be 65.69mm across. That translates to be in increase in diameter of 43 thou, so I guess it's a +40, not +60!
Will standard piston rings do the job, or should I use the proper Hepolite ones?
Thanks.

Re: Piston Help Please!
It's the 1098 (or 1156) I'm rebuilding. Hepolite pistons? What's special about them (/ what are they)? I just pulled the #1 piston (although incorrectly) and it had these markings on it. Having fully stripped out the crank, I didn't have a spare pair of hands to help me turn the block over and check...

Piston Help Please!
Hi all, My pistons are marked: AE 20397 -1, 524 EYN It appears to have been stamped with a very small center-punch, making it very hard to read, so from what I can find, it's more likely to be: AE 20397 V1.524 EYN. I can't find reference to this (or variations on it) anywhere! I was told the engine ...

As far as I know you have to upload them to an online repository such as flickr, then just post links... that's what I did any way.

Re: 1971 Morris Minor Traveler fuel pump
The pumps are supposed to click - it's when it stops you have to worry! If you (as I do) find it immensely annoying, you can replace it with a constant pressure pump fitted under the rear seats, and just disconnect the wiring to the old pump. Looks original - sounds quieter! Then you also have a bac...

Okay, thanks for the info.
Are the con-rod big end bearings the same as a standard 1098, or a 1275? I can't find the info anywhere!

Re: Bit of engine porn, and a few questions!
Okay, 266 it is! I pulled the sump today (should have re-drained it first... That was MESSY) and removed the center main. No major worries there - the bearing had a small patch of copper showing, and the journal itself was virtually unmarked. There was no scoring at least! The thrust spacers are bar...

Mike - thats exactly what I thought!
Matt - I had heard about the MD wheels, but apparently they don't make them any more? I couldn't even find a website or a number the other day when I looked. Please tell me i'm wrong!

Re: Bit of engine porn, and a few questions!
This is the (hopefully) 2" mains 1098 I picked up last week (The machining receipt lists 1275 main bearings any way). It also has a 12G940 with the bigger inlets, harmonic balance and a pocketed block to boot. The oil filter was upgraded to a mini spin-on one a few years ago, so I suspect the d...

Re: Wheel width questions...
Aye I had figured that 175's would be rather sloppy! I was thinking 70 section 165's, because they match the current 145R14's pretty well for diameter, and I like the stock look. I had just assumed that 165/80's were rather too big for the arches, and 75 profiles seem a little hard / expensive to fi...

Re: Wheel width questions...
Many seem to have 155's on 3.5" rims with no problem, and I've read of many with 165's on 4.5J's. They are even recommended by ESM. A lot of other people use 175/65R14's on 4.5J's, and on heavier cars with a long history of no problems, so I can't see how 165's with a 70 profile (approximately ...

Bit of engine porn, and a few questions!
Hi all, I've been stripping down the new engine I bought, and I have a few questions - with pictures, if you would be so kind. 1) Hole above crank: I'm not sure if this is meant to be here, as I haven't stripped an A-series before. It looks pretty ragged, but could just be 'rough cast'. http://farm9...

Okay, thanks for the info.
I think, that due to the forgotten issue with tubeless wheel beads, and the aforementioned large offset, that I'm going to buy some ESM 4.5J steels and fit 165/70's, and maybe get these banded at a later date.
Tom.

Wheel width questions...
Hi there, I'm looking at getting wider wheels for my Moggy - at present she skids rather easily, and the engine power is going to be approximately doubled in the next few months... I hate alloys on a Minor (sorry to any with them - but each to their own), and 4.5" wheels just don't seem worth t...

Re: New engine :) - Which exhaust?!
Thats also good to know - but I like HIF44's and have a lot more experience of stripping them down!
Read the carb mods in Vizards book - seems to be quite worthwhile.
Any idea what needle I could use as a start point in an HIF44 with the above specced engine?

Re: New engine :) - Which exhaust?!
D'oh, I meant an HS4 (1.5"?) But no matter. With a bit of rough porting, the ally manifold from the HS4 will fit one of the 4 spare HIF44 carbs I have from my V8 (just checked), I just need to use a left-hand-side one to get the linkage on the correct side. I'll plonk them all on the dining tab...

Hmm. I have a freshly rebuilt HS6 with an ally manifold - will that do the trick? At least to start with?

Re: New engine :) - Which exhaust?!
:o I was expecting, and to be quite honest, happy with the idea, of a power around the 70bhp mark, but I won't say no to more! Just means I will have to upgrade the 8" drums sooner than imagined... I'm glad you said big-bore; they seem to be easier and cheaper to get hold of! I did think 285 so...
