Re: Stuttering after a few miles then slows down and stalls.

That's good news.

My own Series II tank will soon be 65 years old. How well does the larger ESM fit? Presumably it doesn't eat into the spare wheel space?

Re: Spare tyre/wheel-does anyone not carry one?

For years I kept the spare stowed with its outer face pointing upwards. That was how it came. Then it occurred to me that keeping it the other way up gave me a concave "dish" in which to keep a bag full of spares (hoses etc). A useful addition to the underfloor storage space. I've also slo...

Re: Stuttering after a few miles then slows down and stalls.

Before you do anything else it would be a good idea to replace any rubber hose in the line between the tank and the pump with good quality new hose, there is loads of rubbish out there and even decent stuff can soften with age and collapse when the fuel is sucked through, when you stop the suction ...

Re: Stuttering after a few miles then slows down and stalls.

In all of this, please be careful with petrol. Remember it (and its fumes) is flammable! Some years ago there was an account of a man in Wales who decided to empty his petrol tank using a cylinder vacuum cleaner. Two (loud) seconds later it was embedded in the wall of the house opposite. It hadn't o...

Re: Stuttering after a few miles then slows down and stalls.

Even if it transpires the fault is not the pump, it's a good idea to keep one in the boot as a spare. I also keep a small square of fine Emery paper taped to the adjacent bulkhead, so that I can easily wipe the points in situ (dirty/pitted points being the most common cause when these pumps stop pum...

Re: Stuttering after a few miles then slows down and stalls.

The other thing to check is the filter that unbolts out of the bottom of the pump. If crud has been sucked out of the petrol tank, the state of this mesh cylinder should give a clue. If so, cleaning it might help. But maybe the pump innards will still be bunged up. With all the dismantling to get to...

Re: petrol pump paranoia?

According to my fading paperwork for September 1971, petrol - in London - had reached 33p/gallon. It had been a pre-decimal 6/7d when I first started driving twelve months earlier (in the car I am still running)

Re: petrol pump paranoia?

There was also a sketch (early 1970's, so probably not NTNO'CN) which had the prices (per gallon) displayed outside the petrol station as being remotely selectable (upwards of course) from the pay desk, as on these (new-fangled) calculators. For the benefit of younger members, I should explain that ...

Re: Fuel pump

And for those who employ a hidden switch to disable the pump, the absence of ticking is reminder that you're going to stall after 200 yards! Though a buzzer to alert you of the disabled status gives a more positive warning of this potentially dangerous mode.

Re: Fuel pump

Hi Unless I've missed something, I can't see what the problem is. Ticking is the exact noise the pump is supposed to make as its diapraghm pings back and forth to push the petrol through. It stops moving when there's enough petrol pressure at its output pipe, ie the carb float chamber is momentarily...

Re: Brittany Ferries coronavirus cancellation + MOT 2020

Brittany Ferries have just said they will refund the full fare onto my credit card.
The whole process has been reminiscent of the Dead Parrot sketch; I was half expecting the rep to tell me the boat was pining for the fjords.

Re: Brittany Ferries coronavirus cancellation + MOT 2020

Well done, Mike D. One down..... Meantime Brittany Ferries' Customer Services takes us round in circles. As mentioned before, the Customer Services' email auto-replies that it may take 28 days to respond (four times the statutory refund timetable). So I tried different routes in, to (again) demand a...

Re: Brittany Ferries coronavirus cancellation + MOT 2020

Hi Mike (et al) I've just emailed Brittany Ferries yet again, to tell them that I've instigated a ChargeBack through my credit card company. I won't withdraw it unless BF refund my payment within the EU's regulation seven days. BF's auto-reply says it may take them 28 days to respond; so it looks li...

Re: Brittany Ferries coronavirus cancellation + MOT 2020

Although Brittany Ferries is an ABTA member (number Y6117), the ABTA website seems to be saying that it's only BF's package holidays that enjoy ABTA's financial backing for the Refund Credit Note scheme; ie any "RCN"s for ferry crossings alone are NOT protected by ABTA. Instead ABTA's webp...

Re: Brittany Ferries coronavirus cancellation + MOT 2020

Another update. BF have emailed to say they are issuing me with a "Refund Credit Note" for the return sailing; but then later describe it as a mere "voucher". They say they'll eventually send another one for the 15th May outbound leg. But they are still not saying whether these i...

Re: Brittany Ferries coronavirus cancellation + MOT 2020

Brittany Ferries' webpage now has them cancelling all passenger sailings up to and including 1st June. They will be therefore be offering Refund Credit Notes, with a two year validity. However they don't seem to have replied to my questions: a. Are these are guaranteed by ABTA? b. Are they - at the ...

Re: Brittany Ferries coronavirus cancellation + MOT 2020

The latest from Brittany Ferries is that they have apparently reinstated Portsmouth to St Malo sailings as from 15th May, and they therefore deem that such bookings are "currently unaffected by disruption" (sic) and the usual customer cancellation terms would apply. They presumably regard ...
