Re: MIG Welding

Hello BMCE, this link may be of use, http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=2398 and the site in general is very good; friendly advice on all aspects of welding. I think also the consensus is that gasless is not very good for bodywork, better to shield if welding out doors with gas. Alec

Re: Re chroming

Hello Brucek,

I know I was disappointed in a pair of new reproduction traveller blades I fitted some time ago, rust appeared quite quickly (a couple of years), which I did not expect to happen. I concluded they didn't get a thorough plating as some specialists still do.

Re: Mixture adjustment

Hello BMCE, I understand your point but bear in mind that the adjustment affects the running mixture progressively,, stages 3 to 5 (Normal running area) will be much greater than at stage 12 to 13. Those early stages only have a 2 thou difference so gap change is only a thou per step. The reason I p...

Hello Coalmossian,

is the hub aluminium based, if so I suspect an etch primer will be needed first? I don't know about the rim, unless that is also aluminium? Some top coats do not adhere that well to metal, particularly aluminium?

Re: Mixture adjustment

Hello BMCE,

the mixture adjustment is just that, the mixture adjustment, saying it is mainly the idle mixture is simply misleading. It is adjusted at idle because it is convenient but it is not the idle mixture adjustment in isolation.

Re: Mixture adjustment

Hello BMCE,

the amount of the adjustment is irrelevant, the fact is it does affect the mixture over the full range. Yes there are many different needles to suit the many different engines with different air flow characteristics.

Re: Mixture adjustment

Hello Bmce,

no, that's not correct, altering the mixture nut changes the mixture over the full length of the needle. Needle changes are only required if the mixture is not consistent over the full range.

Re: Mixture adjustment

Hello BMCE,

"mixture adjustments do little for the running mixture - most effect is at idle."

True for virtually every carburettor except for S.U. and Stromberg where it affects the mixture over the whole range.

but it is not a beer so doesn't qualify for this thread. If you want to drink a beer of this strength try whisky.

Re: Re chroming

Hello Seriesmm1,

if your existing hinges are pitted or blistering I don't know if you can successfully have them replated? If the plating is merely worn then that should be OK. It's because of the base metal (Muzak, I think the trade name is?).

Re: Removing traveller B-pillar bolts

Hello David, soak with penetrating oil, giving it plenty of time to absorb and a few applications. I'm guessing that you have plenty of length to use a pair of molegrips to turn the shank. Try tightening first then loosening. The real problem is the cage that holds the nut may distort with too much ...

the reference to a taper was an earlier post regarding a (Fiat?) twin cam engine, not a Morris engine.

Hello Max,

the sky's the limit for a Concours winning car, if you can find one for sale? More than a commercially available restored car such as Ware's for example.

Hello Ratrodmog, " Am I right in thinking that the disc will be held by the two machine screws that normally hold the drum?" All those screws are capable of doing is to hold the drum or the disc, in your case, in place when the wheel is removed, they have very little strength. So in my vie...

Hello Charlie, "thread lock on the taper so it was stuck true and proper.." Tapers are always tight to spilt whether thread lock has been used or not. Often a puller and a hammer to shock them apart is the quickest way, but making sure that the pull is placed where there is no risk of dama...

Hello Lowride Stepside, "No but my friend thinks I should get the head skimmed as a precausion" Why would you do that? Cast iron heads in general rarely need skimming and unless there is a head gasket problem, all I would do is use a straight edge and check for flatness. Having it skimmed ...

Re: Silly pull-switch 'solenoid' question

Hello Fingolfin, I don't believe it was intended as an under bonnet switch, it's just it's design. If you would like to fit something that gives that feature with a rubber push button, get a Jaguar Mk 2 solenoid and replace your pull switch. You'll also need the Jaguar push button switch to start it...

Hello Lowride Stepside,

more trivia for you, there is no 'A' in Theakston's beer, it's spelt with an 'E', i.e. Old Peculier.
Hope that helps :-)
