Re: Better than nothing rust treatment?

Depends how far you want to go, as a minimum treat the rust and then coat with some sort of protection wax to stop it getting worse (something like Blt Hamber UC), alternatively brush a coat of thinned epoxy primer and some topcoat over it after the rust treatment.

Re: 5-30 synthetic oil

Assuming it's in reasonable health I'd give it a try and see what happens, I can't see it doing any great harm. Only thing I would think about is adding a ZDDP addative, most modern engines don't have the sliding surfaces of an older design and ZDDP help with this, it also helps with friction which ...

Re: Clutch advice

Before taking anything appart I'd check through the other hole in the trans that there is actualy a clearance between the release bearing and the fingers of the clutch, something in the linkage could be bottoming out.

Re: Expanding Foam - Aaaaaaargh!

it used to be done by OEM's to prevent noise (imagine an open box member with a few holes in it is a bit like an organ pipe),that would have been after ecoat though and I can't imagine it will have any benefit on a minor.

Re: Best solution?

people seem to be asking at least £600 for any 1275 whatever state it's in, more for one which can be shown to run well, do a search with history in ebay to see what they have gone for.

Re: Timing Cover Leak

I may be getting mixed up but I seem to remember the damped pulley needing a longer bolt, I ended up cutting the threaded part of the starter dog off and welding it to the new bolt. (still fitted fine). The other thing was couldn't use the flat ring spanner I had to tighten the bolt up becasue of th...

Re: Best solution?

Best way to get your money back would be to stick a secondhand 1098 engine in as well, 1275's go for the same stupid money as type 9's.

Re: Conversion from discs back to drum brakes

The Ford based disc set up I copied used Ford discs with the stud holes re-drilled at a 4"pcd and the centre bore enlarged so they slip over the std minor hub and align on the spigit usually used to centre the drum with longer studs. The caliper is then mounted on a bracket which uses the origi...

Re: MOT exempt for 1275 engine

The other option is to stamp a strip of alloy with whatever is on the v5 and rivet it on the engine (this is effectively what happens on moderns) or just remove the tag altogether, if the block has been skimmed there is a good chance it doesen't have one anyway, as far as I am aware there is no lega...

Re: Engine swsp

If you are going from a 1275 to a 1098 then you will need a 1098 flywheel suitable for the Type 9 clutch. (1098 has 4 flywheel to crank bolts 1275 has 6)

Re: underated 1098?

The 1098 is always going to be an issue if you go for max power and consequently high RPM, for a road car most people won't go much over 5000rpm. We have re-built a 1098 with a raised compression (around 8.5:1), re-shaped ports and combustion chamber, a high lift but modest duration cam, damped pull...

I used a beetle dual circuit cylinder with a fabricated frame to mount it in the standard position, it also allowed me to servo assist the front (disc) brakes only which helps with the balance, whole set up works a treat.

Re: Lumenition Optronic PMC-50 (positive earth)

I've found lumenition to be great, only question I would have is is it rated to be fitted to the engine? Electronics don't generally like a lot of vibration, mines on the inner wing.

Re: Combining Accuspark and Sparkrite.

Lumenition seems to be about the best non OEM system I've found, one of my cars had it fitted when I bought it in 1995 and it's still going strong, beats 28 years of fiddling around with points and condensers. I've had issues with the sparkrite type systems and modern Chinese systems.

Re: What oil filter

The stuff I have been using is that meant for a Ford IB5, 75W90 Bo synthetic, As that trans was developed (as the B4)in the early 70's and contains bronze. We had it in the original trans which sounded like bag of nails on engine oil, still sounded the same on the gear oil but didn't get any noisier...

might also be worth checking the internal bracing, this has a habit of cracking at the sides which allows the bonnet to spread a littke and sag in the middle.

Re: What oil filter

Modern gear oils are nothing like the EP oils of the 60's the direction to use engine oil was probably the best there was 60 years ago but technology has moved on a bit since then. At the end of the day it's much the same discussion as using radial tyres, alternators, electronic ignitions, disc brak...

A magnetic mount on a piece of plywood or something similar should sit nicely in there with out the need to make any holes etc. I do find now that having google maps up can be quite a safety benefit especialy in an area I don't know, it shows you topology of the road ahead, any traffic you re likel...
