Re: Traveller wood
badly rotten wood isn't all that nice to look though, so would get rid of it! I thought the wood formed part of the chassis, or is this not examined unless its holding the suspension on? I n which case is an MOT checking to see if; a driver can see where he's going, others can see him and where he w...

Re: Waterless coolant-another one!
Not wanting to prove your prediction wrong! Distilled water and antifreeze, served for years. Spend your money on something you need! :D I have also seen what this has done to current block and water system, - though admit we don't know how it has been maintained in the past. anyway of doing washin...

Re: Is this 1st/2nd selector fork fit for re-use?
Is there any way of reasonably checking/ knowing the condition of a gear box with out striping it completely? I do believe in the if it isn't broke don't brake it! It is off the car and we have never used it, the engine it was with is in pretty good condition - so if both had been running together w...

Re: More cylinder head issues.
I say new, serviced exchange head for the 2 we currently have. not a great deal of work to do but enough considering personal and work commitment for 1st half of 2015.

Re: cylinder head casting numbers
The 456 was used on the 850, 998 Mini & 948 Sprite, the 810 on 998 Mini - A+ (1980-on) and could be lead free. The combustion chamber on the 810 should actually be slightly larger than the 456 - I guess it must have been skimmed and the double springs added in an attempt to warm it up a bit. se...

Re: More cylinder head issues.
the heads we have need a fair amount of work doing to them realistically, and I'm still on the hunt for something bigger, is those fitted to the mini different to minor, midget etc? as been told both and ebay listings sometimes show all then others show only to one, 12g940. main reason for the quest...

[quote="biomed32uk"]Well, the block has gone off down to a local engineering place to run through a hot wash process, I didn't make a bad job of it but that will finish it nicely.
what firm did you use? needing same kind of work done. willing to travel for a good job!

Re: More cylinder head issues.
after consideration of what we have available I at least need new bearings, crank re-ground or new crank price dependent, new piston heads, and will go for new head and rocker shaft. if you hone the cylinders can you the use standard size pistons? of course with all this effort and expense consideri...

The Mini tensioner is by far the best - but does mean buying the later cover. thought so take it its just onto the simplex chain? http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Engine/Block/Timing/MSSK051.aspx?100113&ReturnUrl=/product/Classic/Engine/Block/Timing/C-AJJ3323.aspx|Back to something lik...

Re: More cylinder head issues.
Cheers well there is no scoring to big ends bearings or crank, couldn't fell any wear before removal. part of the camshaft sprocket/pulley broke away when removing so will need replacing, is worth keeping standard, duplex or is there a mini with tensioner set up? heard all types mentioned on here. I...

Re: More cylinder head issues.
I'll try and get photos to enable a more informed opinion from you guys. is usually to have such high amount in wear of main bearings compared to big ends? also can you just change piston rings- is it worth it? never had a compression test but rings seem a bit malleable - none broken however, or do ...

Re: More cylinder head issues.
Progress! The block is all striped, except oil pump. there looks to be no significant wear on the big ends, as for main bearings looks to be bronze/ showing through. are these bronze or brass bearing white metalled? if so how much wear can there be? bores look good but tempted to change piston rings...
