Re: Horn mechanism for 1966 minor

For 1966 a single Lucas 9H low. I think export cars had twin Lucas 9H low and high or at least the wiring for a second horn. Looking at your photo I don't think any of those horns are Lucas 9H although the right hand horn of the left hand pair looks similar to a 9H but does not have the twin blade t...

Re: Breather systems

Thank you Phill. I have 2x TAM1171. I happen to have a (clean) spare sump on the dining table and I have done a trial fit. The TAM1171 fit perfectly and do not appear to need trimming. The cork seals on the other hand are way oversize and will need trimming. I had intended to have the spare sump pai...

Re: Breather systems

Stephen, you might need to wipe the oil away and from then on keep an eye on where it appears again, after gentle motoring. As I suspect it has blown all over the place when on the move at higher speeds. Weather looks to be getting better, good luck. Thank you Les. Since I got back from my trip the...

Re: Rotor arms.

I recommend the red rotor arms that are only available directly from Distributor Doctor. These are made in England by a small business and they are excellent quality. Be aware that other red rotors are on sale that are not of good quality. The poor quality parts manufacturers have cottoned on to the...

Re: Breather systems

I was ever so pleased with myself that I didn’t have any oil leaks but I took the car to the Isle of Wight at the weekend and the car is definitely leaking oil. I used a pint of oil per hundred miles! Investigating where the leak is coming from is my next job. The weather was awful whilst I was away...

Re: Wood and breathers.

My car is “G” actually and has a PCV. Does your car have the original engine? If it does the parts did get swapped around. I do not know the dates when breathing systems changed.

Re: Wood and breathers.

That’s an open breather or draft tube and was the factory system on earlier cars. Rocker cover with breather tube to air cleaner and tappet chest draft tube. With clean air concerns the car makers moved to closed breather systems because the open type is venting crankcase fumes to atmosphere. It was...

Re: Breather systems

So your current set up is a pipe from oil separator to carburettor breather inlet? If so, that was the arrangement for the very last Minors as I understand. The earlier arrangement was a PCV valve which is what I have on a 1969 car. Basically I think the PCV was dropped as the breather carburettor i...

Basically your friendly local machine shop but not quite. Experience with the A-series and particular the later and better little modifications I would argue are essential.

Re: Relocating rear spring hangers

When replacing the leaf springs the normal procedure is to jack up the car on the body and then with the body supported on axle stands and suitable blocks of wood to then jack up and support the axle on stands. Some people use the spring hanging bracket to support the body because it should be stron...

Re: Engine Breather Mod

I would suggest that one stainless steel pan scrub is enough. The crankcase fumes need to have easy passage through the pan scrub. Too much pan scrub could restrict the flow of fumes and then you are back to as if the breather was blocked. The pan scrub is there to catch the oil carried in the fume...

Re: Fuel starvation?

Good, you've worked through things.

Have you checked there is oil in the carburettor dashpot? You can use engine oil if you have nothing else.

Also check for any leaks at the manifold and gasket.

Nice work. I would like a can with a screw thread and o-ring seals for ease of cleaning.

Re: Bodywork Repair Recommendation South East

Thank you Simon and Phil. There is no substitute for asking around. I am just fed up with feeling ashamed of my car and something must be done or it will simply rust away. I managed to have a very minor prang on "Drive it Day". Somebody totally boxed me in and cars had also parked in front...

Re: Fuel starvation?

Agree to check fuel system. Remove spark plugs and examine colour to get an idea of the fuel mixture. 1) Fuel flow test from pump as already suggested 2) Remove float chamber lid (have a new gasket to hand just in case). Look for rubbish in the bottom of the float chamber, check the fuel level, chec...

Re: Bodywork Repair Recommendation South East

There is a company called Jentree in Uckfield that do body work, they are good but doubtful any more affordable than ESM. Les, I rang Jentree earlier and I have agreed I will drive down to see them in the next few weeks so that they can give an estimate. Thank you for the recommendation. Stephen

I have two. A cheap digital and this slightly more expensive analogue meter. For the reasons Berni mentions, I prefer the analogue meter. I carry the analogue meter in the boot with other tools and emergency spares. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07B7PSYM7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=...
