Re: Bodywork Repair Recommendation South East
Thank you. The ESM quote was more than just bodywork so it is not directly comparable. It was for a bare metal re-spray, 4 new wings, 2x door skins, a new hood, most of the interior, new bright work, a new wiring loom and painting the engine bay. It was 5x the figure you quoted. In other words more ...

Re: Bodywork Repair Recommendation South East
Thank you Les. At the very minimum I need to get some more quotes so I will follow up on your suggestion. I think the ESM quote is so high because it is aiming for perfection and includes bright work, interior, a new hood etc. I would be happy to stop the rust and have good bodywork and original sha...

Re: Best recon engine supplier?
I don't know exactly what's going on with ESM and reconditioned engines but the last time I spoke to ESM 2 years ago I wanted a reconditioned cylinder head. They said their supplier is "very slow" and in the end I found a business that specialised in Mini engines to do the work. Since then...

Bodywork Repair Recommendation South East
My car is really showing its age. It has never been welded anywhere or resprayed and the paint is deteriorating badly. There's bare metal in quite a few places and rust appearing in all the usual places (door bottoms, rear of front wings, bottom of boot lid etc etc. At car shows lots of people say &...

Re: Poly bushes
Well there’s always something that niggles a bit, I was still thinking of the variation in the bushes but like all things you can worry yourself silly if you let it. Must be nice for the folk that can say ‘sod it that’ll do’ :D —— but we’re not all built that way !! I'm definitely not the s*d it th...

Re: Poly bushes
Just an update, finished the bush replacement, both sides. Took me a while, being fussy. However I’m relatively happy with the end result. Mind you I ache now ! Anyone would think I’m getting old ——- oh hang on, I am !! :-? Only "relatively happy"? What's not to be happy about other than ...

Let’s also not forget the fires caused by the batteries exploding. Numerous house fires and a few weeks ago an E-scooter caught fire on the platform at Epsom station. Had that been on a packed train it would have been disastrous.

Re: Aluminium radiator
Yes I think it is asking a bit much of the cooling system with a constantly operating fan to cope with all conditions from very cold to very hot! The Morris Minors destined for hot climates were fitted with 2x standard fans so that they had 4 blades.

[. Remember the advance unit is meant to be calibrated to operate a certain degree of advance at a certain pressure. Re: calling the police
E-scooters are a huge problem where I live on the edges of South London. They are ridden on pavements and on roads. The riders don't wear helmets, they approach at speed almost silently and they don't have lights at night. There is also a big problem with ordinary bicycles being ridden at night with...

Re: Tappet chest cover - confusion
You can call the valve what you like but the valve was fitted for the control of pollution caused by piston blow past escaping from the crankcase. It has been called a pollution control valve for many years without dissent. The valve is designed to creates a negative pressure in the crankcase. Yes ...

Re: Vacuum Advance.
We know that Far East Lucas copy distributors are being made and sold by the likes of Powerspark, Accuspark and others either with electronic ignition or points already fitted. I examined one of these units and I thought it was dreadful quality. I suspect the replacement advance units are of the sam...

Re: Tappet chest cover - confusion
You have the later cam follower (tappet) access covers which use a neoprene/rubber gasket. The canister is a oil separator and has a gauze element inside to separate the oil from the crankcase fumes. The disc on top of the manifold is a Pollution Control Valve (PCV) which allows the fumes from the ...

Re: Tappet chest cover - confusion
You have something of a rarity there! I see from your post that this is a replacement engine. Can you confirm the first part of the engine serial number please. Is it 10ME? That type of manifold is designed for a Smiths PCV valve. You have the spigot and the bracket for the valve. The later tappet c...

Re: Engine Number
No, cars destined for export are marked as such on Heritage Certificates. Mine is “home market”. Closed circuit breathing engines are 10ME not 10MA According to my rough estimates, there were 6 months of tourer production in 1969. If that was even over the 6 months it would be very roughly 30 cars ...

The silicon rubber gasket is overkill IMHO.

Incidentally, there is a silicone rubber rocker cover gasket available (Mini Spares GUG705009EVO) but it is a lot more expensive than a cork gasket (£9.84 versus £1.56 for cork)

Re: Vacuum Advance.
How long are these things meant to last anyway? I have never had to replace one but maybe modern replicas are liable to failure? I guess anything from the Dizzy Doc would be good quality though........ There’s a rubber diaphragm inside that eventually either goes hard and won’t move or perishes. Th...

Are they marked MOWOG or not? Aftermarket drums do not say MOWOG on them. I will have a quick look at some old drums I have (I can never bear to throw parts away!)
