Re: recommending engine oil.

Rousell, I'm going down a different path; see here https://board.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=77250 The graphs linked to the thread may interest you. Whatever you choose, I strongly urge you to fit a magnetic drain plug. Drilling you existing plug is easy enough and then you can araldite in a cylindr...

Re: tyre pressures

I'm running on 25 psi all round on my 1963 1098cc Traveller which is equipped with 145R14 radials made by Camac and the wear seems even across each tyre.

Re: Ominous Engine Signs? (magnetic sump plug)

I've been running magnets for some 60 years and seen many in aero engines too, and what Les & Phil say above is quite right. In an old engine the first time you take one out it will scare you witless; just be pleased that all the crap is there on the magnet and not everywhere else. Remember that...

Re: Spotlights

I suppose, Bill, you're running with the usual 55 watt spotlight bulbs so you're pulling some extra 8 or 9 amps when they're on. Not wanting to digress but have you (or anyone else) tried fitting LEDs to spotlights?

Re: Spotlights

Spotlights are a very useful addition. I wired mine directly with the main beam headlights so they all came on and off together, the reasoning being that when I wanted maximum lights I got it.

Re: 5-30 synthetic oil

Thank you to Phil and Myrtles for the links to those interesting sites, and also for Phil's points on the filter bypass valve. Regarding Geoberni's point that the different "recommendations between [the two Workshop Manuals that are] probably 20+ years apart" is to a large degree my proble...

Re: TORCH!!

Mick Lynch, Thanks for your advice on LED bulbs (inc the pm) for the military type torch. Mine was my father-in-law's, standard issue to postmen in the 70's. Sven, I've got a couple of those big LED lamps (both from Lidl) and am well pleased with them. They're of course quite cool which means you ca...

5-30 synthetic oil

What ho, me dearios! I need your advice. An abiding interest of mine is in reducing the fuel consumption of my 1963 1098cc Traveller which is typical in generally being in the upper thirties to the gallon and which with a little care I can stretch into the lower forties. My focus currently is reduci...

Re: Can’t get my daughters car to start

If you're interested in carburettor icing see here https://alaskafloatratings.com/float-flying-journal/what-is-carburetor-icing/ It mostly occurs above freezing in high humidity; I've only had it on the 803cc engine on cold foggy mornings when the humidity was high (hence the fog) and with the temp ...

Re Oliver90owner's point above about the coolant's boiling point when mixed with antifreeze, if its ethylene glycol based like Bluecol then the antifreeze raises the boiling point. Ethylene glycol boils at 197C at atmospheric pressure and a 50/50 mix would boil at 106C. ('id use only 25-33% antifree...

Re: Heater

Elaine, I strongly recommend you ask for a high temp thermostat to be fitted (if needed) such as 88C or higher. For years I ran a 91C thermostat without trouble and gloried in the warmth! I fear your local garage will try to "play safe" and insist on 82-85C (which appears in some Minor man...

Dear Ms Elaine, It seems to me that everyone of the female persuasion is a cold and chilly mortal and needs all the insulation she can get. But like Mr Simmitc I recommend a 88C thermostat (like this https://www.morrisminorspares.com/cooling-system-heater-c52/radiator-cooling-heating-c53/thermostat-...

Corr! "Radweld"! Until you mentioned it I'd forgotten all about it. At least 15 years ago I had a bad rad leak and used a can. It was a complete cure and that rad has had many flushes etc since without trouble. What type to use? No idea - in those day there was only one! In my experience u...

Re: Remote Oil Filter Location

Moggiegeek, I agree with all m’Learned Friend Phil has written above on the pointlessness of oil coolers and disagree with all your reasons for fitting one except number 4, namely “I just want too”. That’s sufficient to justify anything on a Minor and I hope you proceed and that you keep us posted w...

Re: R.p.m. at 60 mph with 3.9 compared to 4.22

Harry,
Just read your paper more carefully and see you say you have the 4.55:1 diff ratio on a 1098cc engine. Really? Is that not a typo for 4.2:1?

Thanks Harry for those real world figures. What you actually get varies quite a lot from car to car so can you tell us what yours is - convertible (with hood up or down), 2 or 4 door or Trav? The weights vary as does the air drag. And your companion's weight? I note that in "Pearson's Illustrat...

Re: Another valve stem thread.

Mr Pike, Your smoke on start up seems curious to me. My 1098 doesn't smoke on start up even though it has NO oil seals on any valves at all. Long ago I stopped fitting them to exhaust valves on the reasoning that they needed all the lubrication they could get and then stopped fitting them to the inl...
