Re: block identification
I think it's been confirmed that my block is a 1098 though, so I've put everything back as it should be.

Re: block identification
I've used a standard 1098 gasket to fit the new 1098 head. I'm not sure why the rocker wouldn't line up, I thought it was the same rocker for all OHV engines? There was a significant amount of clearance adjustment required, the valves on the new heads don't sit as 'high' as on the old head. On compr...

Re: block identification
good news - thanks all. i'll take a photo of the head stamping, but don't think it's rare as i came up straight away as a 948 head when i searched on here.
assume i should expect a bit of a performance boost when the new head goes on?

Re: block identification
Have a look at this topic. We had quite a lot of chat about Block and Head Numbers because I had engine ID issues. You'll see that Philthehill had the answers. https://www.mmoc.org.uk/Messageboard/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=67378&hilit=engine+block&start=20#p642668 Looks like you can breath a ...

Re: block identification
Unfortunately the new head is already on, so that's not an (, easy) option anymore. Only realised when I was boxing the old head up to send back!

block identification
hi all, following on from my other thread on issues with the head on my 66 traveller - i bit the bullet and bought a new reconditioned 1098 head. However, when removing the head (the engine is a Gold seal with 8G stamped on the block), I only just realised that it doesn't have a temp sender hole by ...

Re: head gasket?
It's always been a bit noisy at certain revs, I changed out the dizzy with one from a accuspark for the Morris, so hopefully not timing but you never know! I only ever use super on the car, so no higher to go unfortunately. On the readings, they are a little high, but intend to not trust the absolut...

Re: head gasket?
quite a bit later than anticipated, compression readings below: 1 - 175 2 - 165 3 - 180 4 - 180 All seems fine to me, apart from the small (<10%) difference between 2 and the rest. one thing that did strike me is that 3 & 4 plugs were quite oily, so i wonder if top hat seals certainly need repla...

Re: Travellers now back to the level of 10 years ago!
I wonder if not having to have any Tax/MOT is putting more back on the road. seems to be a combination of more barn finds (the sum of SORN + on the road is higher than 10 years ago) and classic cars having a bit of a renaissance. in my part of London it's much more common to see a classic than it w...

Re: head gasket?
many thanks for the replies - didn't get round to testing compression last night (unexpected post work pub visit), but will do tonight. on water loss - i probably need to top up a bit every few hundred miles, but i think there may have been a small leak on the bottom hose and tightened that up just ...

head gasket?
hi all, been a while! Over some recent trips, i've become increasingly worried about the rattling sound that my traveller engine makes at certain rpms. When going between 40-50 in 4th, the engine sounds very loud with a noise that can only be described as a mix of knocking/rattling that goes away wh...

Re: Rivets on heater motor
It’s the standard one on 1098s (is the round heater ones on earlier models like mm?)
Will look into the pop rivets idea, although never a fan of trips to the hardware store!

Rivets on heater motor
Afternoon all, been a while After much procrastinating I’ve finally taken my heater out to resolve the squealing in winter when I turn it on. Have everything out and looks like I did it just in time, the matrix must have a very slow leak as there’s rust everywhere. Now, I’m trying to get at the moto...

hi all, hope you're doing well! the good news is, the basket case moggy i've been working on for a few months had its first trip out yesterday and all running well. so well when i used the brakes i almost went through the windscreen (has a brake servo and never driven a moggie with one!) anyway, i'm...

Re: rear bearings - slight play?
thanks Phil - makes me feel a bit better! there wasn't too much of a rumble/if any when i had the half shaft removed, but was concerned with the play. now off to rethink what could be causing the rumble. maybe it's the beginning of some overrun noise from the diff. not sure what sort of life it had ...

rear bearings - slight play?
hi all, off for a fairly long (100mile) drive in the traveller tomorrow and have noticed recently that there's a slight rumble from the back when going over 20mph. the other day i removed the half shafts to check the bearings and there's a bit of play on the offside. however, when the wheels are bac...

Re: diff drain plug - magnet clearance
Hi Les, yup getting the diameter is easy enough for me, but it's the depth I'm most interested in as don't want a magnet ashing against the diff!
