trunions
Hi, I have replaced top and bottom trunions. Put in poly bushes to top. Is there supposed to be a gap between the washer and bush. Looking in the manual supposed to be .20 inch but not sure if this is right with poly bush set up. Also how tight should I do the top and bottom nuts, is there a torque ...

PAINTING BRAKES
Hi,
I have removed whole of left side suspension as need to do bushes and wheel bearing. Will be doing right side as well.
I plan to clean all up and paint. Any ideas best paint to use for back plate and drum, I'm guessing both have to painted with heat resistant paint??
Thanks
Rob

Re: What brand of Degreaser?
I had same problem, new 'gunk' is rubbish.
I agree with Les, good scraper (purdy multitool scraper I found really good) get the worst off and then I used white spirit - works a treat with a bit of coarse wire wool, plenty of blue roll.

Re: best place to put axle stands
Hi Phil,
Plan to take out backward under petrol tank.
Thanks to monty and biomed32 for advice, I guess biomed32 is best plan. However i do not have ramps so piece of joist timber on axle stands will work just as well??
Cheers
Rob

Hi,
I am going to drop back axle and replace tired suspension. also clean and paint the axle.
However I'm a bit stuck as to where the best place is to put the axle stands.
Any ideas??

Re: universal joints
ok f'up for propshaft... having bent the yoke of the original one, Ian kindly gave me an old one going spare. However I decided not to attack this one with my limited kit and rubbish wood vice! Hated doing it but gave in and sent off to specialist prop centre in Bristol. I discovered that in future ...

Re: universal joints
Hi Shoebone,
Yep I have exactly the same, 1mm out.
Had old LDV engineer (who I know) look at it and he was of same opinion. Going to try another make and see!
Cheers

Re: universal joints
Hi, Well I took the UJ out from the other end of the prop shaft and tried the new UJ in this. Nope doesn't fit! I have definitely not bent this end! Still slightly over sized by about 1 mm. No hammering involved, used a vice with big socket and little socket. And no I have not dislodge a needle roll...

Re: universal joints
Okay so I have got 3 circlips in now! 4th just will not recess in at all.
Also the joint moves but feels tight is correct? The diff end (original, moves freely).
I spoke to local garage - said might be able to heat yoke up and bend out slightly, is this ok?

Thanks everyone for advice.
I'm going to have another look, if it still looks like I have inadvertently bent the thing , I will get new prop.
Cheers

Re: universal joints
Hi All, Well the damn things won't go fully back! 2mm out meaning I cannot get the clips to sit in grooves. I have taken back out no loose pins causing problem. The new joint measures up against the old one. I can only think I have bent the prop head inward by that amount when I was hammering away (...

Re: universal joints
Hi Bob, Bought from ESM, they only have one on their website. Powerline RGUJ115 just looked it up - its for MGB/Midget, didn't think to check  I'm guess that is why is different. Unless they fit minors?? Marked diff to prop, prop to gearbox had already been marked. what difference if not put b...

universal joints
Hi,
I need to replace UV joint at gearbox end of prop, taken it out (with much cursing) however the replacement is smaller than original. The caps look like they fit right, it is the actual centre piece that is smaller.
Does this matter or are they stand size now??

Thanks for the advice. Steering column off, carpet fitted and column re-inserted. No obvious damage caused, although it nearly took my head off when it came free!
Was a bit of a job opening up that bottom clamp!

removing steering column
Hi,
I need to remove the steering column on my 1968 minor.
Have undone the bolt at the base and the 2 screw bolts up by the indicator stalk. However cannot get it out. Am i missing something or does it need a bit more weight behind it.
Thanks
Rob

Re: Squeak over potholes
If nothing damaged or looking like needs sorting, just, spray some WD40 or some such around the torsion bar joints (basically anything that can move) see what happens. It stopped mine from squeaking. I'm with Steve old cars just like to make noises, doesn't always mean catastrophe is round the corner.
