Re: Intermittent Metallic Screaming Noise clutch/gearbox?

Well folks, I have truly got egg on my face. It turns out the fan belt tension theory was correct. Started it up on Saturday and immediately an awful screeching noise came from what I considered to be the front of the engine the belt had about an inch and a quarter of play between alternator and cra...

Re: Intermittent Metallic Screaming Noise clutch/gearbox?

Once again thanks chaps for all the theories and advice I will get onto it as soon as is possible. I do love just tickling about in it and this noise definitely needs further investigation before I go anywhere in it. * Definately no rise in engine revs when the noise kicked in. ** Did seem to occur ...

Re: Intermittent Metallic Screaming Noise clutch/gearbox?

Carbon release bearing sounds possible, I’ll check the fan belt for tension first and adjust if necessary. That’s the quickest cheapest solution if it’s works. The old boy who had the car before me had the dynamo swopped out for an alternator. No disk breaks fitted just the life affirming push as ha...

Intermittent Metallic Screaming Noise clutch/gearbox?

Hi all, After going out for a 20 minute drive in my 1964 2 door minor. Then helping to prepare to remove a gearbox from my sons modern car I pass the spanners then said my goodbyes. Was literally 40 yards down the road there came a horrible metal on metal noise similar to a band saw cutting through ...

Re: oil warning light intermitant when driving

Thanks all, My plan is when possible to swop the oil pressure switch and establish if thats where the problem is. Fit the Smiths oil pressure gauge I have and post readings. Get feedback from the senate and take appropriate action. Gut feeling is engine replacement or prefered rebuild of original en...

Re: oil warning light intermitant when driving

Thanks for the comments chaps keep them coming please. Firstly may I opologise I made an error I refilled with 20/40 not 20/50 the latter was already in. I got some 20/40 as it was intimated this viscosity is good for the older leakier engine. Again sorry for error. I will fill engine to the full le...

oil warning light intermitant when driving

Hi all, Could do with some advice please. Change oil and filter a fortnight ago. Put Classic 20/40 motor oil in as 20/50 seemed to be a little thin and my engine has a few oil leaks. Changed the filter for a new paper one. The camister is the old type with a thin rubber ring to give you the seal as ...

Re: Distributor and Vacuum advance/retard component.

Hi folks, Could anyone advise me on where I might find the serial number on my distributor. The chap from the Distributor Doctor has asked for it to establish if it is an original fit to my car. I have had a quick look and am flummoxed as to where the number is located. If anyone has the knowledge i...

Re: Distributor and Vacuum advance/retard component.

Richard, Thanks for the advice I've just emailed the "doctor" for a price on rotor arms, condensers, and points and if he does the vacuum pipe? Auto electrician recommended the Lumenition Electronic Ignition but its a pricey piece of kit. He said he's never had one go wrong. Think for now ...

Re: Distributor and Vacuum advance/retard component.

Well I took the pipe off the carburetor float chamber and turned the ignition on and after 36 seconds my jug had three quarters of a pint of petrol in it. I stopped at that stage as I didnt want the jug to overflow. So I recon that a pint would be filled in about 45/50 seconds. Hope that's about rig...

Re: Distributor and Vacuum advance/retard component.

Richard, Do you mean just turn the ignition on and let it do its own thing. Then after a minute or so there should be about a pint of petrol in a container that would have gone to the carburettor had the pipe been connected? I am in agreement about changing too many components at once I could compou...

Re: Distributor and Vacuum advance/retard component.

Its played up from the outset. The chap who had it before did 100 miles in a year and only used it to pop to the allotment and local shops. Possibly the chances are he never got it at full working temperature or got stuck in traffic. It has however deteriorated since I have done almost 1000 miles in...

Re: Distributor and Vacuum advance/retard component.

Well folks, Ran some 500 grade wet & dry between the fuel pump and distributor points this morning. Turned the non rachet advance a few turns and just about nearly broke down after a few miles. Once the engine got hot and was ticking over in a lay- by as it had seriously lost power going up a sl...

Re: Distributor and Vacuum advance/retard component.

Hi, Thanks for the speedy response I have had a chap who commented that he thought it was not a standard Morris distributor. He guessed it could be off a Mini. The next step is the pre fire eater. Just hope either me or the copper pipe are flexible enough for me to get my laughing gear around the pi...
