Re: Going mental

A quick update for everyone, once the fuel level dropped below the pipe joint in the tank (below the take off point) the problem occurred again. The solution is to keep the tank full and not let it go below half full. My mate the mechanic has suggested we re route the fuel pipe to a new take off poi...

Re: Going mental

Well, I was there and saw exactly what he did, he bent the inner pipe (the confusion was caused by him assuming the pipe from bottom of tank to fuel pump was one section) away from the bottom of the tank. He thought that the pipe was pushing on the mesh and therefore was causing the obstruction. By ...

Re: Going mental

So it could be there was a gap in the inner pipe to fitting, and by bending the pipe backwards, the mechanic has closed that gap. In which case it should probably be looked at when I have used most of the fullish tank I now have.

Re: Going mental

Doesn't the pipe protrude into the tank and bend down? I understand that the fact it was pushed against the bottom caused this issue. It got quite reproducible but I've now done two circuits and so far, so good.

Re: Going mental

Okay, Hands up who said fuel? Go to the top of the class. I had a new fuel pipe fitted by a garage a few weeks ago, they had miss fitted it and the end of the pipe was touching the bottom of the tank, every time I went up hill the fuel would stop going into the pipe, hence the pump working all of th...

Re: Going mental

Thanks everyone but I'm giving up. The problem is too much for me and as has been pointed out, I'm just throwing money at it now. I have engaged a mechanic to come around on Friday and sort it out. Thanks for all of your suggestions and as I hate leaving anyone up in the air, here is a summary of wh...

Re: Going mental

But thanks anyway, yes it came complete. Update: I changed the needle and seat, and the pump cut out, no seepage from the lid, so I took it round the block and in exactly the same place it cut out again. I have yet to rig up the lamp from the LT side as I don't have a 12v bulb and lampholder laying ...

Re: Going mental

I was wondering that Amgrave, for 7 quid to get a new needle, it's worth putting one in and seeing.

Cheers

Re: Going mental

Now, I'm trying to follow advice and be methodical but I have limited time available so can only get out to do anything on it very infrequently. Today I took the top off of the float chamber and made sure the float moved freely, then I got my wife to switch on the ignition while I held the float up ...

Re: Going mental

Thanks guys, I bought the laser spark detectors and tried it, they all sparked fine but the fuel pump was working all the time and I noticed there was fuel seeping from the float chamber top. Is there supposed to be some kind of cut off that stops the fuel pump pumping? I don't think this is the ori...

Re: Going mental

Thanks everyone. The mechanic told me I need a new fuel pump anyway as the old one was dodgy, so I fitted a brand new SU pump today. This thing is so LOUD. Are you supposed to hear the sound of the pump above the sound of the engine all the time? Anyway, didn't cure the issue I got less than 1/2 mil...

Re: Going mental

The problem is Budgie, that because it's an intermittent fault, it will tick and flow as I already did this. Probably need to do it when it's broken down.

Thanks all

Re: Going mental

As I've changed just about every electrical bit there is, you may be right, I will try a new petrol pump but I feel I'm throwing good money after bad right now, the old one is a bit ropy but it really seemed electrical.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Going mental

So this is the situation, Gary (our 1969 2 door minor) has been breaking down a lot, and I mean a lot... We took it to our local garage and they changed the condenser and the coil. Still kept breaking down. I got a mechanic to fit a new distributor, still kept breaking down. I changed the HT leads s...

Re: Thermostat housing studs

Unfortunately I was sent the wrong studs but they are sending new ones so I get them tomorrow, hopefully they will turn up in time for me to get it going and back on the road. My Son scraped off the remains of the old gasket with a sharp chisel and the head now has some light scratches on it. Becaus...

Is there really no sealant between the faces, I would be happier with just a smear, it won't do any harm will it?
