Re: Hats off to the 803!!

The 803 has one fault; the lack of oil filtration. If you are careful and replace the oil regularly (or top up is there is a regular loss) and avoid the motorways then there is no reason to give up on it. Yes the bearings are a bit weak; the white metal backed shells are there to absorb the debris t...

Re: Seat belts - Series II 4 door

The likelihood of hitting your head on the turret reinforcement above the windscreen and getting a fracture is very real. A local garage was fitting some tires for me and the fitter described how his dad had nearly died that way in an identical car.

Re: Something for series 2 owners

My 54 has the full pack, all used and the tickets from the service book pinned to the receipts listing all the work done. I wish i was in as good nick as my car, which is 15 years older than me. There's also an unused book of ration vouchers for petrol, as the ration ended that year. That is a stran...

Re: Dash ashtray - What to replace it with?

there is a switch just below the dash There was no switch for the dash lighting on my 1954 car, was that standard or optional? As long as your main beam is operational then it will be either the wiring to the light or the bulb. Statement of the obvious, I know, however my point is that they are the...

Ah, well mine have never worked, so I'll have to figure that one out. Do you know which is which?

The right one is main beam (red filter) left one illuminator (there is a switch just below the dash) both MES bulbs.

I would take Phil's advice, he knows his stuff. I wish i had replaced my big end shells when my oil pressure dropped.

Re: Dash ashtray - What to replace it with?

The two grey things are light fittings, one a full beam indictor, the other a dash ilumination. I like the look of the grill, and i don't use the ash tray any more. I did fit a pair of car speakers above the parcel shelf, in the circular holes in the bulk head, using a bit of ply to fill them out. Y...

Re: Stiff door hinges

Has anybody had the doors off? It's not so easy getting the hinges lined up straight after putting the doors back on and the symptoms are a stiff door. Inside the A pillar there are a pair of plates that the hinges bolt into and these can move in 2 dimensions to adjust the hang of the door. I took o...

Re: series II grill

My sII had it's grill chrome plated by it's original owner, straight after he bought it, as he wanted the original look. The whole panel was removed, stripped of paint, and given the shiny metal finish. Then the 'grill' bit was taped off and the rest re-enamelled. When i got the car resprayed the ch...

draught excluder matches the trim colour; red leather has red fabric, blue, green, etc. Mine is a black 4 door, with red trim, including the draught excluder.

Re: 1953 (March) Series II Restoration

I got to the radiator today on my never ending parts inspection list and I'm guessing it is the original item? I thought the core was in an ok condition, however there is one small area that is badly damaged so I am looking for someone to 're-core' it for me, but retain the surrounding structure an...

Re: series II door strap chrome bracket

I'm pretty sure the strap is just a folded length of leather that is screwed to the door with a pair of screws, with a pair of cup washers to spread the load, and the chromed steel then hides this. My drivers door strap is quite soft and flexible from use, and the passenger door strap is hard and st...

Re: Split-screen chrome surround on eBay??

Yes the ends of the trim have a hole. Even though there is only one joiner in the offer they are both very similar so a copy would be possible. Brass is quite malleable so there is a chance it could be straightened out. Mine won't sit down in the groove in the corners, probably having been prized ou...

Re: 1954 style air cleaner - opening?

It's the unit labeled 1, which is a silencer. The steel mesh receives oily vapours from the rocker box cover via tube 2 so can become quite filthy over the years and just needs washing in petrol to get back to 'clean', as Phil said. The oil bath type (4) shown in the remaining graphic was the 'expor...

Re: Rotodip System

Does anybody know when the Rotodip system was put into production, the reason I ask this question is that recently I rolled my 1952 series mm (in the garage by the way) & found that under the lovely grease & oil the underside was black- a semi gloss (not underseal) where as the upper body is...

Re: What did Morris get wrong originally?

I had a look at that rotodip reference and found this http://www.austinmemories.com/styled-34/index.html It seems the chemistry was to help the primer stick to the steel. I always assumed the shiny steel that was revealed when the rubber underseal was broken away was a tin plate. Before i had mine r...

Re: What did Morris get wrong originally?

I agree that the master cylinder isn't SO much of an issue. The steel quality used on the early cars was pretty good and I think even the first cars were rotated in the "Rotodip" paint tank but they certainly weren't "plated". In the interest of accuracy, the brilliant designer ...

Re: What did Morris get wrong originally?

It's not so hard to get to the master cylinder really, you just put a jack under the torsion bar and push it up out of the way to access the bolts. The earlier minors were dipped in a plating tank after the spot welding had been done so were relatively rust proof. When I scrape off some of the origi...
