Re: 1955 Traveller, VAS 788

Hi! Good to hear from you. Yes the car came from Leamington Spa. I don't know much of the history - I sold it to a young guy from Germany who was in the UK at a drinking/camping weekend in Devon* (* It was a warm up session for Plymouth-Banjul charity rally). I bought the car from Yorkshire. The mod...

Re: Ford Ka seats which year fit the Minor

On a social media site I've seen people using leather seats from Mk1 Ford Ka. The light beige option can also be stained (eg red) The rear seat is a bit smaller than the Minor but otherwise a great option. One of the guys posted pics of how to cut & reposition the mounts to fit the original bolt...

Re: Strange problem. Lovely starter but just coughs and won't start easily if left for a couple of days

The closest one I've had to this isnt likely to be the same but never say never. It was a 90s engine & it happened when cold - engine would spin freely on the starter - and eventually after a lot of cranking it would splitter and after a few tries it would run on a few cylinders before running n...

As far as I'm aware you can't attach! (As far as I know)
The "too large" warning is a bit misleading..

Re: No drive!

Many of them have lasted 60 years, but if you drive hard enough they are more likely to break faster.

Axle tramp, dropping the clutch, speed bumps and pot holes all add a shock load.

Sometimes it can be that the Bendix is dirty.
Clean off with brake cleaner and don't put any oil or grease on it

Re: Are all 2 door car doors from any year interchangeable ?

Travellers and LCV produced in different production plants - hence the risk that they varied to the saloons.

I don't know about Morris but most other plants adjusted body & door tooling to get a better fit..

Therefore door from a different production plant is often not a good donor.

Re: Setting static timing with no reference

For finding TDC and doing the timing you don't need to be on compression stroke on #1. It can be #1 on exhaust stroke as well. If it's 180 degrees out on the cam, it is 360 degrees on the crank (#4 will be on compression stroke but #1 still at TDC. The entire process is identical though . To get clo...

Re: Are all 2 door car doors from any year interchangeable ?

Top tip - don't swap doors between 2dr saloon and Traveller unless you want to risk a poor fit.
Same between van and 4dr.
The difference can be tiny but a few mm is more than enough trouble.

Good tip about the SII hinges though - that's probably a bigger issue if you didn't match it correctly

Re: Newbie

As regards upgrade vs original - also don't be scared of original. There's a reason the cars are still running - because they were amazing. Original engine, gearbox and suspension.are more than OK for modern roads. The original brakes are NOT what people are used to if they've only driven a modern. ...

Re: Engine refitting without gearbox

I've never used a hoist if the front panel is off - just a bit of floorboard over the front floor and 2jacks

Scissor jack to hold up front of gearbox.
Trolley jack + piece of wood in the hole where engine used to be.

Remove engine mounting towers and there's a lot of room to play.

Re: No messing

I've had it on a Fiat where I needed to remove engine bay parts to access the cover from back of headlight.

My headlight is done - not a problem on Vauxhalls - although on some you need to access via wheelarch.

Since then I've had a rear spring break.. parts are ordered :-?

its got a decent sidelight.. (so good I nearly didn't notice there was a light out) but that doesn't make it suitable for non-lit areas and A-roads etc..! (although theres a % of people on the motorways etc.. who don't seem to care) The other issue is bends, other vehicles and any other obstructions...

Re: No messing

I've got a headlight out - I noticed when I checked at the weekend. I will fix it, and normally do it same day but it hasn't stopped me driving on well lit roads to/from work this week. Yesterday 11pm on way home from work I drove past a traffic police car in a lay-by. I was nervous about getting a ...

Re: Brake master cylinder

I've had to split one of the seals to remove as it was pretty stiff. Brake fluid for lubricating on assembly - yes OR brake seal grease (it's not common stuff) Just as a warning NEVER use normal grease / copper grease etc.. on brake seals.. Most greases are mineral based (as per standard engine oil)...

Re: replacing water in cooling system

Most of the time you don't have to worry about the heater - it will self bleed by running the engine (provided thermostat is on place and not stuck open).
The heater is probably still full - unless you've had the heater out!

Just fill the radiator and top up if the level drops.

Re: Cleaning / Protecting Chassis Legs

I've only used one degreaser + it worked very well on a caked engine and gearbox. I don't know about inside if bodywork so I don't want to advise either way. Clean water is fine and drying afterwards is the only consideration - when it sits in a spot welded seam it will take a lot more effort to rem...

Yes - always think twice about giving out your email address. If you don't need to, don't do it. My worst one was a few years back getting finance info. A few quotation sites wanted my email address - at least one of them was selling email addresses to the spam companies! When a reputable company us...
