Re: Cylinder head removal 1098

Points taken but I'm curious why my gasket suddenly failed, maybe the PO's did not re torque the head on the new engine. I have an oil leak on the manifold side which may be from the head gasket. I am going to look at torque when undoing each nut. Need to find the problem if I can lift the head off...

Re: Cylinder head removal 1098

OK made a mistake as bracket will be raised by thickness of nut say ~ 12 mm. On my car the rear stud as two nuts one for the head other for stab. bar which is a full nut and does protrude from the end of the stud. Thinking of replacing the steel pipe with a rubber hose with metal inserts at each en...

Re: sudden engine failure 1098

I think you'd know about it if you had got the engine hot enough to melt 2 pistons! I'd be surprised if it ran at all, much more likely to be seized. Head gasket failure is most likely, however piston ring failure also possible, as are damaged valves/valve seats, though unlikely on 2 cylinders concu...

Re using silicone fluid-is it a straightforward replacement for normal, or do you need to flush repeatedly to remove all trace of the old?

Re: Combining Accuspark and Sparkrite.

I can’t actually understand what possible advantage there would be by trying to combine Accuspark and Sparkrite Stephen Combining the two removes the potential for the mechanical points to move setting or fail over time. Probably overkill based on my own experience of using the Sparkrite system on ...

Re: Combining Accuspark and Sparkrite.

I'd imagine Sparkrite either use an optical sensor in the distributor, or a magnetic one, which then triggers the amplifier. Both will depend on movement, so static timing can be a bit hit & miss

Agree on this, I do the same. Not sure why though, does it cause less corrosion?

Re: Pink antifreeze

My antifreeze is yellow. Can't remember the brand, but I've just drained the system, it's been in there for over 2 years and is still perfectly clear.
In the past, I've used blue antifreeze, which has always been fine.

Re: (Another) starter motor problem thread

Great to hear that it worked out in the end, and all for the price of a new water pump. :tu1: Do I understand correctly that you were able to turn the engine over with no problem but that the seized water pump prevented 2 batteries from doing so? Did the pump look anything like mine? 20230916_12005...

Re: (Another) starter motor problem thread

Problem solved, thanks to @Kevin_C of this parish. After about 5 weeks, I'd tried just about everything. 3 starters, 2 batteries, 2 solenoids, umpteen combinations of starter to battery cables and earth straps, and still it steadfastly refused to start. I'd tried all the obvious things, even giving ...

Re: New boy!

I have a disc conversion on my Traveller (a 69). I don't regret the conversion, they are better and do brake more firmly. That said, I never felt under braked with drums, and I agree that well maintained drums are perfectly adequate, certainly for a standard engine & running gear. The key there ...
