Re: In depth SV motor experience needed.
Thanks for all that - yes the dish type one looks the right shape Rob. And just questioning the brass suggestion, given this is holding back oil and not water, what would be the advantage of brass? Easier to installl - ie. softer - or just a general rule go for brass re corrosion.

Re: In depth SV motor experience needed.
Thanks Ian - first thing i did but perhaps searching from Australia (that usually has lots of uk sources) has less - only saw a set for block but no confirmation of size and referred to 2 plus spare for block - figured probably for 2 in water jacket. Thanks too Phil and that would seem to cover it. ...

In depth SV motor experience needed.
I have the motor (original motor from 7/3/49 despatched tourer) rebuilt and running nicely in the car..... except I have a 'prolific' leak from between motor and gearbox. When i put the motor together the scroll on the crank looked good and I put a feeler gauge between it and the alloy bit etc and w...

sorry for slow response - rods 8mm and mains 10mm - I believe it is all metric.
And follow up - all back together and motor sounds very sweet..... but i have another problem now.... see other post!

Sounds good Rob. You probably have access to original ones but just thought i would mention that I have a feeling these are the originals ones on this car and happy to measure anything if that helps...... attempts to give back with all the great support i have received here!

Re: Urgent help needed - tension of conrod bolts early SV
Late here now - will check tomorrow. Yes I am sure some of my workshop manuals have those general settings printed into them. Worst part is knowing deep down that it felt too tight and would strip - should have stopped and checked at that point. But you have that confidence from what you think must ...

beware piston height on rebuilt motors on sidevalve engines
At the risk of looking like an idiot, I thought i would share this experience in case it helps someone else. This is on a very early sidevalve engine that I 'inherited' with the words 'its all machined, just needs to be assembled'. The motor had been bored to take 0.080" oversize JP pistons - n...

Re: Urgent help needed - tension of conrod bolts early SV
Thanks heaps Rob. I did google but obviously I am not as good at it as you are! I bought this big fat factory manual..... but no torque figures! Its interesting though that after 45 years or so of working on cars and bikes, you get a bit of a feel for when something seems too tight for a certain siz...

Urgent help needed - tension of conrod bolts early SV
Hi everyone - I owe the forum some updates on the resto project but right now just trying to tighten the rod bolts - stripped the thread on one then got a replacement from another motor and snapped it. I'm trying to line up to see a mate who has a digital tool for reading tension on bolts so i can t...

Re: Early '49 Tourer - Adelaide
Couple more progress shots taken a few days ago - bumpers went on last night and have the dash panels back from paint so more photos later. None of it has been straight forward either from different parts of the early cars or just simply finding the right screws and bolts when you inherit a car in p...

Re: location of 'side/tail warning light'
Thanks heaps Rob - how rude of me having completely forgot i asked this. I had a stroke at the end of June and been so lucky from fast action to have made virtually full recovery but one thing it has done is affect that shorter term memory. I hope it gets better but meanwhile i just need to make mys...

location of 'side/tail warning light'
This is for a very early '49 tourer that has come into my care in the smallest of pieces..... ever had that circular nightmare when you just can't find a certain part! Anyway, putting a new loom into the car and the wiring diagram shows "side and tail lamp warning light". And on the old lo...

Re: Piston Suppliers
I can't help putting in a plug for little ol' Adelaide and JP pistons that I often saw in the UK. We don't make much anymore with our automotive manufacturing crashing, most recently with Holdens and the spin off of all those associated industries crashing, but to my knowledge JP is still producing ...

Re: Car painting with spray cans
Spray cans are expensive when you consider how much actual paint is in those cans. Generally things can be had cheaper in the UK than australia as far as I can see, so I reckon you could probably buy very cheaply a capable direct drive compressor, with drier/filter and HVLP gun - I reckon I could ge...

Re: ADVICE ON SERIES 2 WINDSCREEN WIPER MOTOR NEEDED
But just confirming for clarity of thread, this early mount is different to S2 or 1000 or even 1950 MM's with the triangular shape mount. I know this thread is asking about S2 but because of info already contained in it I had asked a question about the odd very early mounts. But agree good to confir...

Re: ADVICE ON SERIES 2 WINDSCREEN WIPER MOTOR NEEDED
Just a bit of an update in case it helps others. I got the 1000 style mount but talking to a friend, its still is going to have contact without incorporating that style of bush or trying to modify for width etc. I am sure it works fine and maybe it doesn't have any more vibration and probably be hap...

Re: Early '49 Tourer - Adelaide
Just a quick snap of a bit more progress. Rear drums and shoes were machined wrong and had to have a bit more trimmed off the shoes, otherwise would be sitting back on wheels. Panels all on now and seem to line up pretty well but as it happens, of course the new door seals i had sent are the wrong l...
