Complete bare metal respray 54 split screen

Despite popular opinion I intend, or have fitted the metal etched wings loosely in place, spaced out 10 mill, ready to paint. The too hard basket is the doors. Do I really have to pull them all apart, as it looks like an awful job, but I have to bare metal them. I have a combination of metal etched ...

Re: Pinion seal replacement Morris 1000

Nice vids, thanks very much. Im amazed that the crush pinion bearing spacers have been around so long. Anyway replacing a diff pinion seal, is no big deal, as Ive done heaps, and try to keep the re tension sensible. I love all the tech bits, and Ive done a few diffs in my 60 odd years of mechanical....

Pinion seal replacement Morris 1000

I was pleasantly surprised that ESM have not only the seal but the sleeve to cover the wear. No use replacing a pinion seal without it, if its grooved where the seal runs. I don't think crush spacers had been invented back then, at least I hope not as it makes it easier to retorque tighten the flange.

Re: Wing piping

Thanks for the replies Seems optional. Rather the pipe than messy caulk. Took 4 wings boot and hood to sand blaster/etchcoater. Looking forward to see the results. Its a long road.

Wing piping

As I bought the Minor in pieces, I was not certain that the cars out of the factory had piping between the body and the front wings. Im inclined to think not, but would like to know. Thanks someone for the answer.

Conrod lockplates

I don't want a "kit" as such, with other extraneous bits, just the 4 plates. Can anybody direct me to a supplier please.

Re: 948 head specs

No its not the gauge, mate. The trouble is, that the engine after assembling laid around for about 5 years without being fired up, and just maybe there is a bit of tension loss there, that's all I can put it down to if the head is exactly as it should be.

Re: 948 head specs

Thanks Don you have made my evening. Im having trouble with compression, I mean, the motor starts and runs sweet, but its down across all pots to what it should have been and all new fresh bored etc. Picks up & revs sharp as a tack. Valve timing is right. So after a bit of research found that the he...

948 head specs

With these older heads, and, of course we dont know their history, may I ask, where can you find the exact thickness of a standard head. I need to know this before I send a head to the machinist so I can ascertain, how much I can skim off it. A measurement from the highest point in the combustion cha...

Re: Machining outside valve stem posts for seals

I need an automatic little paste, with a sentence that I can stick on my replies, saying Thanks Phil you are a legend. Ive ordered 8 of each, as I have a spare head, and yes, it was interesting the piece I read about the need to keep the exhaust valves seal free from seals, providing an efficacious ...

Machining outside valve stem posts for seals

Has anyone had a head machined, at the valve guide posts to interfering thickness enabling the fitment of the later type seals to the inlet valves.? Looks feasible.

Keeping floor screws standard BSF

If you need to alter your floor, gearbox cover and want to install nut inserts like rivets with the special tool, the nuts closest to size generally come in metric. So, when the inserts are fitted, try a drill that just seems to start into the thread but no farther, then run that bit through the nut...

Catch cans venting

If I simply connected a catch can to the base of the block, probably the fuel pump plate, and aired it through the can and filter top, will that improve crank case ventilation, without applying vacuum to it.? As the rocker is vented to the HS2 carb cleaner, and there is a bit of air flow there, so n...

Re: Mystery knock on start up cold 948+

Wish I has asked before I removed sump, as I did inspect the bores that I could see and the gudgeons, but no never did that test, as I didn't fit the pistons up. Macihne shop did that. The thing is, the noise goes out within a second or two, and I was wondering if I might have a tight pin to piston f...

Re: Mystery knock on start up cold 948+

When you are in the middle of restoration and the mechanical is done, with new everything including stainless inserts in wheel cylinders and Master, that fussy, there is one thing that saps the enthusiasm to keep going if something you have done is not quite right, and to neglect investigating, is a...

Re: The test for bedded rings in a newish engine

Thanks Bob, done all that. Now here's the thing. When I first set the engine up I had the wrong needle in the SU Too rich, and it overfueled to the point I think that it may have contaminated the oil in the sump with unbunt fuel. An that smoked on acceleration and when under power. now its not doing...

Re: Mystery knock on start up cold 948+

Of course. Well probably not the top of the rod, but how much oil would remain withstanding. A quarter of a thou, or less, pressured? I mean the plastic measure is not absolutely gospel, is it. Getting back to the journal showing the biggest clearance, if 3 thou locked it up, it could not have had 5...

Mystery knock on start up cold 948+

All new rebore new pistons crank grind etc etc, and all was terrific, then after running a few days I noticed a slight knock, at start up when the engine was cold, but as soon as it warmed was quiet as a mouse. Sounded like a noisy big end. Pulled off the sump and strainer, and checked the big ends ...
